Looking for Alaska
Everything in Looking for Alaska takes place at the Culver Creek boarding school in Alabama. The setting probably takes place in the 21st century.
During the entire novel, the setting moves around a lot of times in very different ways. The weather at the beginning of the novel is humid, and the good weather creates an atmosphere of happiness. In chapter 15, a rain storm begins in Alabama and there is wind and rain happening for about a week. During this time, Alaska becomes extremely moody and Miles takes it personally. The smells of Alaska, the vanilla and cigarette smell, plays an important role in the setting of the story. Miles has become addicted to this smell, and to him, it’s a smell that brings back good feelings.

This is important to Miles because that moment for him is perfect and the night creates a mood, as if there are no limits, no flaws that can be seen and it is just their souls together as one. The only character that is closely connected to the setting is Alaska because for most of the book, her mood is connected with the weather and the setting around her.
Paper Towns
In the beginning of the book it takes place in Orlando, Florida. Margo and Quentin spend the night before she disappears driving around Orlando, mainly Jefferson Park and Sea World getting revenge for Margo. Jefferson Park is where Margo and Quentin lives.
In the second part of the book, while Quentin searches for clues on where Margo has disappeared, he starts to explore the outskirts of Orlando. He searches places called pseudo-divisions: sub-divisions that were started, but never completed (somehow his mother made it up). A lot of the action happens at the school that they attend and in places where Margo visited, like the abandoned mini mall.
In the third part of the novel, the setting expands further as the four friends go on a road trip to find Margo. Their road trip takes them from Orlando, Florida to North Carolina, and finally to Agloe, New York.
It is very much implied that the time period is in Mid-May because they graduate and prom takes place in the
First of all, the story takes place in the summer of 1960, in a town by the name of Castle Rock in the state of Maine. The problem of the book immediately comes to surface as a boy by the name of Ray Brower from Chamberlain, Maine goes missing and is presumed dead. The main character, Gordie Lachance, and his three friends, Chris Chambers, Teddy Ducamp, and Vern Tessio, set out to find his body after telling their parents that they are going camping.
Written by Junv Con, “Dust Bowl Journey” is a historical fiction about a family moving from Kansas to Oregon to escape the drought, lack of wildlife, and to summarize, the Dust Storms. Without the Dust Storms, there would be no reason to move, and because of this, there would be no story. The description of the dust clouds with their “greasy, peppery smell” and the “clouds of dust raised up so thick they blocked the sun.” gives the reader a clear idea of why the Dust Storms were such a harmful thing to our characters, making them want to move. Continuing to the rising action, the author uses lots of repetition with the knife and the meadowlark. The repetition makes the reader wonder two things, ‘will the grandfather find his knife?’and ‘will
This lesson will take place throughout the months of November and December in a class of sixth graders. I will do this lesson during this time period due to the relatable Minnesota weather, which can help the students make connections while reading. I will also use this time period to nicely finish the semester off with a final project about the novel, before the students go home for their Holiday and Winter breaks.
In “The Interlopers” The setting helps you better comprehend the story and how the characters are feeling. “It was an open winter,
Alaskan Bush People has been accused of faking things before and now it turns out that Noah Brown allegedly had a fake date on last week's episode. Setting plays a big role in the short story “Winter Dreams.” The author F. Scott Fitzgerald establishes the setting as soon as the story begins. The story is set at a golf course in Bear, Minnesota. It’s the end of fall and winter is approaching quickly. The narrator describes the scene as, “ In the fall when the days became crisp and gray, and the long Minnesota winter shut down like the white lid of a box, Dexter’s skis moved over the snow that hid the fairways of the golf course” (Fitzgerald 588). The fact that Dexter works on a golf course has a giant impact because they aren’t open in the winter time.. Due to this he has a lot of time to think. His job is to caddy the wealthy residents of the town Bear, Minnesota and it fill him with sadness. This quote is explaining how the setting is affecting the life of Dexter Green. Since he has all this down time, this is where the name of the story “Winter Dreams” comes into play. The setting is also a symbol for Dexter’s changing his state of mind. The narrator states, “At these times the country gave him a feeling of profound melancholy” (Fitzgerald 588). Dexter is feeling sad because he caddies for the wealthy for a living and he wishes nothing more than to be like those people. Once he comes

During the sixties, American people saw the rise of the counterculture. Counterculture was a group of movements focused on achieving personal and cultural liberation, mainly embraced by the decade’s young adults. Because many Americans were members of the different movements in the counterculture, the counterculture influenced American society as a whole. As a result of the achievements the counterculture movements had made, the United States in the 1960s became a more open, more tolerant, and a more freer country. In 1969, close to half a million self-described hippies, peace makers, and Aquarians made an expedition from mainly San Francisco to Woodstock in upstate New York. The Woodstock Music and Arts Festival was called an Aquarian Exposition and hailed as three days of peace and music, over 400,000 people attended; it was peaceful. However, life outside of the woodstock festival was not. America seemed to be dividing as a country. The war in Vietnam went on for roughly another 15 years. American boys were still being sent to Southeast Asia by the newly elected President, Nixon. The increasingly unpopular war intensified a campus protest movement. Burning draft cards and peace marches became daily fare on the evening news. And not all of the demonstrations were peaceful. The summer after Martin Luther King was assassinated, riots broke out in 125 cities including, Chicago, Baltimore, NYC, Kansas City, and Cincinnati. Meanwhile, at the Democratic convention in Chicago, the anti-war movement tore the Democratic Party in two. Both critics and fans agree that Woodstock has become part of the mythology of the 1960s, even if the actual event didn't necessarily represent the musical or political taste of most of the young Americans adults at this time. Some say it symbolized the freedom and idealism of the 1960s. Some argue that Woodstock represented much of everything that was wrong with the sixties: a glorification of drugs, a loosening of sexual morality and a socially corrosive disrespect for authority.
The 7 commandments made by the pigs symbolizes the power and manipulation the pigs have over the other animals. The use of the commandments represent how words can manipulate others and lead to an abuse of power. For example, at the end of chapter 3 Squealer manages to convince the rest of the animals that the pigs needed the apples and milk they had taken to preserve health. In addition, Squealer tells the animals that the pigs don’t even like their food and only eat for the good of the farm. Then, he uses Jones’ return to justify their extra meals and says “Do you know what would happen if we pigs failed in our duty? Jones would come back! Yes, Jones would come back! Surely, comrades," This ended the argument and convinced the animals that the pigs needed to eat the main crop of apples. This breaks the farm’s commandment concerning animal equality however, the pigs trick the animals into believing everything is right through fear mongering.
The film is set in the year 1959 in a Vermont boarding school named Welton Academy. This academy is a very strict all boys school that demands the most out of every student so that they are completely ready for university. The term that this takes place in welcomes a new English teacher, Mr. John Keating who attended Welton himself, and follows the transfer student Todd Anderson whose brother was one of Welton’s finest students. Todd’s roommate is Neil Perry, who comes from a middle-class family that made multiple sacrifices to put him into Welton. Neil’s father is extremely strict with his son and dictates his schooling and extracurricular activities. Friends of Neil, and later Todd, include Charlie Dalton the rambunctious one, Knox Overstreet the romantic, the very smart ones Steven Meeks and Richard Cameron, and Gerald Pitts. The movie follows the seven friends through the school term starting with how strict and very stressful the courses and teachers are then showing the drastic difference of Mr. Keating. The movie remains on the lives of the boys, mainly focusing on Keating’s class and how he wishes for his students to become free thinkers which leads to many different issues with the friends.
The main character of Paper towns is Quentin Jacobsen. He is 18 years old, lives in Orlando, Florida, and is a senior about to graduate high school. He is a regular person in the beginning of the book with fears and isn't special in any way and he lives a very normal life, except for that he is madly obsessed about his lifetime neighbor, his childhood friend, and his lifelong crush, Margo Roth Spiegelman. Margo unlike Quentin, lives a very not normal life and her personality is the complete opposite of Quentin’s. Margo is brave, curious, confident, and is downright awesome. These attributes make Quentin feel like Margo is amazing and make him want to be with her. Nine years ago at the age of nine, Quentin and Margo find a dead body in Jefferson park, Quentin is scared of it and backs away while Margo on the other hand is curious and approaches it. Margo says that she can see that all the strings inside of the dead guy are broken. Then Quentin grabs her and they run home away from it. This shows that Quentin is a person that is easily scared and afraid of things, but he also really cares about the people he love. Then nine years later, Quentin Jacobsen is an average, unpopular student that is still afraid of things, while Margo Roth Spiegelman is one of the most popular girls in the whole school and is still courageous and brave. Quentin and Margo now hardly even talk to each other now until, One night, Margo goes to Quentin’s room and asks him if he wants to
Honestly, as I was reading this story I did not fully think of power and authority. I thought about the fight between morals and society. I guess that could be contributed to your questions in a way. As Orwell’s narrator was on his mission he was bombarded with a society that hated him telling him what they felt that he needed to do. They were the power in the situation. Though his position was supposed to hold all authority, nobody would listen to him due to the fact that their power overpowered him. He felt that in order to get on their good side he had to do what they wanted, even though it was against his morals. The colonists had the power because the land that Orwell’s narrator in inhabiting was once theirs, or from what I gathered through
In order for Quentin to find margo, he has to follow the clues until it leads him to a “paper town” which Margo referred to the night before she left, even though it didn’t seem like an actual place. Margo even said, “It’s a paper town...all those paper people living in their paper houses, burning the furniture to stay warm...Everyone demented with the mania of owning things...I’ve lived here for eighteen years and I have never once in my life come across anyone who cares about anything that matters.” However, what Margo is saying here is more figurative than literal. For instance, when she goes to the “paper town” she isn't actually going to a town made of paper, she is
