Find Your Fight Most people would argue that there is a constant battle between darkness and light, but in George Gordon, Lord Byron’s poem “She Walks in Beauty,” he explores the possibility that the two can coexist inside of a person. Robert Frost once said, “Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words.” In this world, everyone just wants to be understood. Poetry can make people feel like they are not alone because someone else was able to bring life to his or her emotions, thoughts, and feelings. People read poetry for many reasons; some read poems to explore or discover the deeper meanings and connections of the world, while others are seeking self-understanding. Generally speaking, poetry is a form of …show more content…
Some people are afraid of it. Some people embrace it. It appears everywhere there is an absence of light. Darkness is merely the absence of light, yet since most people don’t have light inside of them it gets quite dark. And people spend too much time being afraid of the darkness outside than the darkness within themselves. It sits there inside, permeating your heart and mind until it is the color of pitch. Be wary of the darkness within, for unless you unleash light upon it the darkness will surely devour you” (Wynter_Wolf_13). Most people spend the majority of their lives just trying to find a balance. In his poem, Byron paints a picture of this woman whom he believes has found that balance, and many of her characteristics were brought to life by Mark Schwahn’s character Peyton Sawyer from the television show One Tree Hill, a series following a group of high-school students from the small town of Tree Hill, North Carolina that …show more content…
Byron tells his readers that this woman is “all the best of dark and bright” (3). He explains that there is not battle raging inside of her between these two powerful forces; she has found a way to make peace between them. Mark Schwahn’s character, Peyton sawyer, possess this same quality. She is extremely complex and unique character. She has had a very difficult life filled with pain, loss, and heartbreak. With every traumatizing experience she endured, a piece of her died; all the pain began to drive out the light that was once inside of her and replace it with darkness. Throughout the evolution of this character, she learned many lessons including that darkness could be beautiful. She poured out all of her emotions into her art, which was very dark, and she later discovered that her drawings were so powerful, they saved someone’s life. She learned that once a person has been broken, they will never be the same. The pieces will find their way back together, but they will never fit exactly as they did in the beginning. Byron saw this same quality in the woman from the poem. He says that “all that’s best of dark and bright/ meet in her aspect and her eyes” (3,4). When he looks in her eyes, he wants to know what pain is hiding behind them. Peyton Sawyer is the girl that people always leave, and she started to
Darkness is a recurring image in literature that evokes a universal unknown, yet is often entrenched in many meanings. A master poet, Emily Dickinson employs darkness as a metaphor many times throughout her poetry. In “We grow accustomed to the dark” (#428) she talks of the “newness” that awaits when we “fit our Vision to the Dark.” As enigmatic and shrouded in mystery as the dark she explores, Dickinson's poetry seems our only door to understanding the recluse. As she wrote to her friend T.W. Higginson on April 15, 1862, “the Mind is so near itself – it cannot see, distinctly”(Letters 253). In this musing, she acquiesces to a notion that man remains locked in an internal struggle with himself. This inner
In order to maximize meaning and overall total effect of a piece of work, writers use various literary devices. These techniques enhance the author's work and add a dimension that results in higher reader satisfaction. Throughout the poems I have read this quarter thus far, I have discovered the use of imagery as a prominent source of literary embellishment. In particular the image of night is used in poems "Acquainted with the Night," written by Robert Frost, and "Her Kind," written by Anne Sexton, to portray a dark and lonely tone. All through both poems there is a dark feeling due to word selection and associations to evil
“Poetry may make us from time to time a little more aware of the deeper, unnamed feelings which form the substratum of our being, to which we rarely penetrate; for our lives are mostly a constant evasion of ourselves.” British writer T.S. Elliot believed that poetry allows people to express the innermost parts of themselves, hidden from others and the rest of the world. E.E Cummings was an American poet famous in the early nineteen hundreds for his unique style and ideas. His poems, shaped by their individuality, are passionate statements that can encompass a variety of meanings. His use of free verse allows interpretation and comprehension up to the audience. .
Traditionally, a lack of light gives readers a impression of death, while light is used to illuminate life and gives off a sense of happiness. However, in Eileen Chang’s fiction light and darkness are emphasized to elicit different feelings. For instance, light can be used to illuminate desolation or obstacles that characters are hesitant to face. Meanwhile darkness can serve as an ominous precursor for calamities that have not yet unfolded. Most importantly darkness and light serve as critical links to major themes in Eileen Chang's fiction.
Poems can touch on various topics and appeal to many different emotions. Poets like Robert Frost and Dylan Thomas both wrote poems that uses dark and light as some sort of significance. While both poems use dark and light, both have different takes on dark and light and ultimately gives a new meaning to what significant it has their poems. “Acquainted with the Night,” by Robert Frost seems to be about a lonely guy, that walks around at night a lot contemplating his every move. “Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night,” by Dylan Thomas uses the poem to address his dying father, it goes into detail about his father’s loss of health, and strength, and encourages him to cling to life. The urgency in the speaker’s tone is what draws the attention and has kept the poem alive for so many years. Both poems use dark and light to symbolize some sort of struggle that one must get through, as well as they vary in form and meter. Both poems accomplished this very well and ultimately created wonderful poems.
The poem, "She Walks in Beauty," plays with the opposing forces dark and light. Immediately the poem begins by the speaker saying that "the best of dark and bright meet" in the woman's eyes. Additionally, the words "shade" and "ray" in the first line of the second stanza make the reader think of dark and bright. Further into that stanza, once again, the opposites are combined when her "every raven tress...softly lightens o'er her face." "So We'll Go No More A-Roving" also plays with the contrast of both dark and light. The poem takes place
¨We Grow Accustomed to the Dark¨ by Emily Dickinson gives us insight how she tries to
She doesn’t allow it to consume her entirely. This contrasts Robert Frost’s, Acquainted with the Night he shows a person who becomes enveloped by the darkness and the finality of it. While both of these contrast each other’s opinions of what darkness is and whether it’s good or bad, they both keep the theme that
The clichéd elements of darkness and light are a critical part of any writer’s toolbox. Besides being able to alter the atmosphere of any given piece, darkness can also be used symbolically to achieve a specific purpose in writing. Emily Dickinson and Robert Frost are known for their use of the cliché element of darkness, particularly in Dickinson’s “We grow accustomed to the Dark” and Frost’s “Acquainted with the Night”; these pieces use darkness to signify isolation and depression. Both authors differ in how the darkness is isolating and depressing; specifically, how the author feels the darkness separates him or her from the rest of society. Even though Dickinson and Frost use darkness to show the uncertainty and isolation they do differ using imagery, point of view and structure
Lord Byron captures the radical difference of illumination and shade with imagery. He also describes the woman’s appearance with this literary device. In the first line, Byron creates an obscure vision for the reader. “She walks in beauty, like the night.”(1) Night is black and somber, and this line is used to make the feel reader insecure and unsure. However, in the next line, Byron introduces the radiance of stars, which perfects the image of the woman’s likeness to the night (“She”). “Of cloudless climes and starry skies;”(2) Without the introduction of stars into the black night, the woman would be incomplete. This ties back to the theme because the woman’s beauty is complete because she is not only obscure but also radiant. Byron uses imagery to describe the woman’s fair skin in contrast with her raven colored hair to visually show how beautiful dark and light can be together. “One shade the more, one ray the less,/Had half impair’d the nameless grace/ Which waves in ever
Lord Byron in She Walks in Beauty tries to explain the beauty of a woman, the speaker is overwhelmed with her beauty, and struggles to explain her amazing beauty. He starts by saying, “She walks in beauty, like the night / Of cloudless climes and starry skies” (1-2). By saying the she walk in beauty, the speaker is saying that everything about her is beautiful, and she does not just have a pretty face, but it’s her whole living self that makes her beautiful. Women are not normal compared to the night; night is usually a symbol of evil and darkness.
Lord Byron, a generation two romantic poet who left an extremely prominent mark in history. Along with his immense talent in poetry, he was also known for his extreme interest in women. Clara Drummond, a romantics biographer explains, “Byron had many lovers, and most biographers agree that he had relations with over 1,000 woman.” Aside from his immoral activities his poetry is heavily influenced by Nature, as are most of the romantics poets. Lord Byron explains three messages in each of his three poems, She Walks in Beauty, To The Ocean, and Don Juan; their messages being carrying yourself in a proper manner, familiarity at a young age, and how old age brings less excitement.
Poetry is a form of literature often exploring feelings using metaphor, simile, and aesthetic and rhythmic qualities of language. Common forms of poems are Haikus, sonnets, cinquains, and free verse. It has been defined in many ways by several scholars, for example, Percy & Loxon state: ‘Poetry lifts the veil from the hidden beauty of the world, and makes familiar objects be as if they were not familiar’ (Percy & Loxon, 1821). This means that poetry can open another depth of feeling, allowing the audience to understand emotions they previously didn’t. Furthermore, Eliot stated: ‘The poet’s mind is in fact a receptacle for seizing and storing up numberless feelings, phrases and images.’ (Eliot, 2009, p43). It seems many scholars consider poetry as a literature often exploring emotions and feelings, in a cathartic way, as metaphors and symbolism are a useful way to explain emotions. Woodsworth also stated that poetry was a material to explore feelings, saying: ‘Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings: it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquillity’ (Wordsworth in Croft & Cross, 1997:5). Most types of poetry explore feelings and emotions, with examples being the eulogy and elegiac form, love poetry, sonnets, and praise songs. Inspiration for poetry can be found almost anywhere, in songs, life experiences, pictures, and feelings. Wainwright stated
Many people who write poems understand the world around them more than the average populace, due to the fact that they can observe nature itself in a finer aspect in comparison to a person who doesn’t. The reason why I say this is because they train themselves to be more self-aware about the surroundings around them. In my personal opinion, I believe
Poetry is the representation of mental thoughts, it symbolize all the conflicts that dominate the poets mind either from childhood memories or impressions laid down by the society which is always in the process of gradual change. Every writer has something beforehand in mind which acts as an inspiration for his/her writing. Every poet after being inspired need to present his mental agony or bliss in a way that he be able to make his reader fathom the real and core meaning of the issues tossing in his mind. The poet revamps and tries to convey his message in the form of words which may or may not convey what he/she actually wants, so as at times vocabulary couldn’t find the appropriate word for a feeling. The poets cannot claim and remain adamant
