“With great power comes great responsibility.” A famous quote, with an anonymous author. Although, I believe that the quote should say, “With great power comes great temptation to succumb to corruption and evil.” Anyone who has ever been in a position of authority has had the thought of abusing that power, and falling to evil and corruption. That is not to say that there are not those who use their power for good, because there are good people. One of the most fundamental struggles in the history of mankind is the timeless battle between good and evil. Not just in war and outward conflict, but internally; the struggle to do the right thing, which often leaves an individual with less reward, over doing the wrong thing, which often results in more reward and personal gain. The theme, “Good vs. Evil” ties in …show more content…
A good leader always does what is best for the group, even at the expense of themselves. But where is the line drawn? Jack actually provides food and entertainment for his followers, whereas Ralph constantly drives the idea that they need to keep the signal fire going and get rescued. A normal person would see these two sides, and likely say that they would choose the side of Ralph, and being rescued. But, this is not always the case. Everyone is always willing to fall in line and follow those who lead with structure, civilization, and law. But, as soon as structure falls away, so does law and civilization. Jack seizes this opportunity to break away and start his own society with the promise of, “food and fun”. When people are faced with things like starvation, dehydration, and boredom, they will often choose to follow someone who promises to provide solutions to these basic human needs even if that leader is corrupt and evil. Eventually all the boys except Ralph and Piggy fall in line behind Jack, and adopt his policies of savagery, hate, and the desire to hunt and
Jack respects Ralph as a leader and another alpha, however deems himself the higher qualified to lead the group; bringing forth a vote for a chief. However, the choir boy followers weren’t strong enough in numbers to counter the seemingly endless supply of little kids that voted for Ralph. After this unexpected result, Jack develops an instant grudge towards his only competition for power. Ralph begins to form a democratic society solely focused on rescue; yet jack has other plans in agenda. Under Ralph’s seemingly boring command, Jack develops other outputs for his primal necessity of dominance. Jack begins focusing on the task of hunting animals and finding weaker beings to prey on. Jack even blatantly leaves the rescue fire to chase after a pig; had he not have done so, the group could have possibly been rescued by the boat passing by during the fire’s absence. Once Jack finally has enough of going in circles with Ralph, he makes the decision to shake off Ralph’s influence and create his own niche. Within Jack’s tribe, lifestyle is greatly different to that of one designed by Ralph. Jack and his followers seemingly devolve into primal beings, as Jack gets his fill of power. Control over others was all that Jack longed for, with a crazed and burning

Johnn, lived in the largest tree in the world. He was a purple bird who lived with his brothers. Johnny, as he was known, was different from them. His brothers had green feathers and wings but Johnny was purple. Johnny did not fly but I he tried since he was a little bird. Cruel white eagle scared him every time he tried it until it decided not to fly. Johnny can’t fly, so, he could not attend bird school, and trained as a soldier for the protection of nature.
In Lord of the Flies, William Golding uses the symbols of good and evil through the Lord of the Flies and Simon. In order to convey the underlying message, that the fear of the unknown brings out the evil in humans. William Golding's fictional piece, evil is symbolized through the lord of the flies because he represents the loss of civilization and innocence. This quote shows that the character Lord of the Flies gets into the boy's thoughts, “There isn’t anyone to help you, only me. and I’m the beast fancy to think you can hunt and kill. You knew, didn’t you? I'm part of you. Close, close, close! I’m the reason why it’s no go? Why these things are the way they are?” (Golding chapter 8). This quote proves, that the Lord of the Flies are trying to get into the boy’s heads and they are slowly becoming less civilized.
“When you see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming a self-sacrifice–you may know that your society is doomed”(Rand). This was stated by Russian-American novelist Ayn Rand; the extract relates to the novel William Golding wrote called Lord of the Flies. Golding wrote about a group of schoolboys trapped on an island from a plane crash. The boys had to figure out how to survive without grownups. Trying to survive was difficult because they had to have common sense and order. They lose those traits throughout the book which resulted in selfishness and corrupt behaviors.
Determination has played a motivating role for characters in many novels. One such example can be found in William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies. Ralph shows his determination to get himself and the other boys off of the island. Ralph, the authority figure and protagonist, is a determined individual because he persistently assured the boys that they would get off of the island. Throughout Ralph’s efforts to get the boys rescued, he experienced a number of hardships and uprisings.
Chirst figure represents all that are innately good as a subtle, yet suggestive figure which parallels to Jesus Chirst. In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, Simon is intended to be a Chirst-like figure who demonstrates generosity, omniscience, and benevolence. Although Simon is not directly described as the Chirst himself, in these two passages from chapters three and nine, literal figures of Simon are given to compare him to the Christ through: his generosity towards the outcasts, being the only one to confront the truth, and denial of revealing the truth by the boys. Initially, the biblical parallel of Chirst and Simon’s benevolene is represented in the earlier passage through the description of Simon’s physical appearance.
People are controlled by Society in many ways, such as the clothes they wear, and the music they listen to. It all depends on the society. The way people are controlled by society is by the rules that are made, like when Sam n’ Eric became traders it was a rule that they could not leave Jack’s tribe. With the bad society the boys are in on the island, When Piggy gets knocked off the cliff and died the boys were not upset, they were angry and continued to try and kill each other. Since there are no adults on the island they have to take care of themselves which turns into them trying to hunt and kill each other.
“We want to have fun, and we want to be rescued” (page 37) A good chief or leader is someone that cares about all the individuals in the group, does not break people down, and blunt and honest with a group. In this case, Ralph would be the best choice for chief for many reasons. As shown by that quote he really cares about what was best for the group, but yet was also about having fun on the island while they were deserted. Ralph throughout the novel shows civilization through his action and so many more characteristics that make up a good leader. Ralph is the best leader in the novel. This is evident because he makes good decisions to benefit the group, his priority is to be rescued over everything else, and he is the most civilized of all
The Child: in the novel, Lord of the Flies, the littluns represent ‘the child’. They’re vulnerable, innocent, and obedient. The littluns were very obedient and playful, and because of that, they were often bullied and mistreated by the big kids. They didn’t think that people younger than them deserved respect. Only a few of the big kids were sincere and respectful to the littluns, including Piggy and Simon.
Ralph- Good- The fair-haired, tall, handsome Ralph is an obvious choice to lead the band of children stranded on the island. He has a "directness" in his manner that the narrator calls a sign of "genuine leadership. He seems to be genuinely interested in the welfare of the entire group and can get along with all kinds of people.
In Lord Of The Flies, the Beast on the Island represents more than just literally just a Beast on the Island. The Beast on the Island literally means there is a Beast on an Island, the boys believe there is something on the Island, other the the boys. The boys’ also blame the beast for anything that happens on the island that they cannot explain. The Youngins believe that there really is a beast, while the older kids believe it's just their imaginations.
“The thing is - fear can’t hurt you anymore than a dream.”(Golding, 116). Ralph’s point of view on fear is declared within the quote. Ralph is the protagonist derived from William Golding’s esteemed bestseller, Lord of the Flies. In the renowned novel written by Golding, young boys in a plane have crashed and descended upon an uninhabited island with more than sufficient vegetation. On the first chapter of the fictional writing, many of the boys are very enthusiastic and exhilarated about being on an island without any parental supervision. At first, order and tranquility was established by the children and there was more civilization on the island compared to savagery. However, as the novel advanced, the readers could identify the kids were
George R.R. Martin, an American author, said “[t]here is a savage beast in every man, and when you hand that man a sword or spear and send him forth to war, the beast stirs.” Martin notes that humans possess a savage nature that may or may not completely alter their personality. Some individuals have the strength to withstand their savage temptations and obey their morals. Although others may be consumed by their innate human nature, causing them to descend rapidly into savagery in order to achieve their goals. In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, fire, the conch and the island represents how the innate darkness of humans can cause people to go from civilization to savagery. First off, they use the fire as a rescue method but it ends up
Jack is only interested in power, he acts like a dictator and doesn’t follow the communities thoughts. Some actions that Jack takes that shows this are "I got the conch," said Piggy indignantly. “You let me speak!” “The conch doesn’t count on top of the mountain," said Jack, “So you shut up.” This shows how Jack acts like dictator because he doesn’t listen to what the people say. “He's not a hunter. He'd never have got us meat. He isn't a perfect and we don't know anything about him. He just gives orders and expects people to obey for nothing. All this talk-.” This shows how Jack is power hungry and will basically do anything to get it, he is trying to make Ralph look like a bad chief in order for him to try to take the power away from him and get it for himself. “We’ll raid them and take fire. There must be four of you; Henry and you, Robert and Maurice. We'll put on paint and sneak up.” This shows how Jack uses his power to make his tribe members listen to his orders and steal the members of the other tribes. Jack is only interested in power and wants the power for his own
