In Lord of the Flies, Golding portrays the society in the novel as a selfish society. His message about society is that selfish and unthoughtful people make societies difficult to live in. He wants to educate us about society because the conflicts presented in the novel occur in our everyday lives. For Golding, society is selfish because of the way people act, think and express themselves as we see the boys behaviour changing drastically.

First of all, societies strive from the actions made by people when these actions are beneficial to the general population. During the course of the book many incidents occurred that portrayed the thinking of selfish people. For example, Golding chapter 5 “…fear can't hurt you any more than a dream. There aren't any beasts to be afraid of on this island... Serve you right if something did get you, you useless lot of cry-babies!” When the Littluns show fear for a beast, Jack says abusive words to them without thinking of how they would feel. By thinking selfishly, the way a society is functioning can change drastically. For instance, the boys were working in unison and in one unit Jack seeks to accomplish his own goals. By thinking for himself, Jack puts a rift between the boys and separates them into groups. When the boys began to think selfishly and had little thought, many deaths transpired. For example, Golding chapter 10 “I expect the beast disguised himself.” Due to the fear of a beast, the boys would do anything to get rid of it. However, during the storm they see a figure and attack it causing an innocent member of the group to be killed. When the boys thought selfishly and thought slightly, negative outcomes
