Lord of the Flies Chapter Analysis Answer Sheet Kayla Plauger Chapter 1 1. William Golding paid such close attention to each minuscule detail so you, as the reader, can better understand how the island feels and looks to the boys. 2. In the overall effect of the book the character descriptions assist you to better understand the boys’ personalities, strengths, and weaknesses. 3. To the boys the island initially looks roughly boat shaped and an island ready for exploration. 4. The conversation between Ralph and Piggy shows that Ralph is carefree and a little immature for his age. 5. Ralph wants to give up his chief status because he has had enough of the crazy talk of the beast, ghosts, and nobody wanting to listen to him. 6. This conversation reveals that if we didn’t have grown-ups in this society the world would be a wreck. It also shows that it is comforting to have adults around to tell you there’s nothing outside when really there is, punish you when you do things wrong, and keep things running smoothly even though its rough. 7. Ralph’s pressing sense of responsibility, as a leader, prompted him to take the lead in this exploration. 2. Jack was determined to have a fort on the rock island to regain control of the group. 3. The sighting of the beast, by both Sam and Eric evokes fear and brings suspense to the plot. 4. The personification of darkness is a symbol that the evil is taking over the boys. Chapter Seven 1. The general theme of this book is how evil is in us all. The dirt on the children symbolizes the evil within them. 2. The dirt that is on the boys’ skin and hair represents the evilness that is filling their hearts. 3. In their confrontation Ralph realized that he should no longer argue with Jack and they should cooperate and work together.
