Los Cenzontles is a band, a nonprofit organization, a music academy, a community space for youth and families as well as a hub for Latino artists. The group works together to amplify Mexican roots in the Bay Area and beyond. Los Cenzontles produces original music, videos, and educational tools. They also teach classes in traditional Mexican music, dance, and arts and crafts. The group operates Los Cenzontles Mexican Arts Center in San Pablo, California. Dr. Lopez and Dr. Morrison were able to bring this band to Sonoma State University Weill Hall, especially for our CALS 165 class.

Austin Villegas is a senior at Chino Hills High School. During his time at CHHS he participated in many programs. Austin played football for all four years of his high school career. He was the starting right tackle for the freshmen football team that went 9-1 and won the league title. After his freshmen football season Austin was promoted to the varsity football team where he earned his varsity letter as a sophomore. Once Austin’s junior season started he worked his way into the starting lineup as the right guard. When Los Lobos perform in concert today, audiences in the thousands cheer them on. It’s hard to believe that the group started out as just another garage band playing popular rock-and-roll tunes from the radio. In 1974 four high school friends from East Los Angeles formed Los Lobos (Spanish for “The Wolves”). David Hidalgo and César Rosas played guitar, Conrad Lozano played bass guitar, and Louie Pérez played drums.

The Los Banos Unified School District enrolls about 11000 students in Kindergarten through the 12th grade. The School District supports nine elementary schools, two junior highs, two high schools and one alternative high school. The School District is led by seven members of the Board or education. The School district employs five hundred and seventy-five certificated employees and four hundred and twenty-five classified employees. The schools are all currently full, with many residential divisions currently being built in Los Banos. The genre bachata was developed in the Caribbean island of Dominican Republic. This genre was created based on boleros (slow-tempo Latin music), son cubanos, waltzes, Mexican music and merengue. Bachata is well known as love and depressing songs in which many people describe them self with this genre. At one point back in the earlier 1960s, bachata was considered vulgar and low-class. “Acceptance of the music has increased significantly in the last two decades, although some dominicans, both individuals living on the island and stateside, still do not accept the music because of the implication of its lower-class origins and associations with such themes as crime, poverty, drinking, and prostitution’’(Stavans 47). The genre Bachata has spread and grown so quickly for the past few years that is has become very famous in the United States, Europe, China, and South America. Kept on saying, I’m trying to help you, when really they hated the way you dressed, they hated your personality, and they just hated you. What would happen if that spoiled brat was your so-called “BFF”, “Best Friend", or even “Sister”? Every single day of the fourth grade to fifth grade was another day to think about what would happen if I said ”I was too busy” or “I had something to do last week” or even “I had a dentist appointment that day”. Every single day was a complete nightmare that I just kept trying to run away from, but it always seemed to catch up to me. She was not always another Bowser, and I was not always another Mario.
