Sancho contributes to the new country economy he lives in. He was excited waiting for his first customer. He worked in his own shop. He is a great example of overcoming obstacles. Sancho says,“!Quiubo! I'm Honest Sancho and this is my shop. Antes fui contratista pero ahora logre tener my negocio” (1040). The words of Sancho express how proud he was to be owner of his shop. Before the big success, he worked hard in construction. Overcoming that was not simple, but he did it. The secretary stepped by his shop, “Good morning. I'm Miss Jimenez” (1040). Sancho says “! Ah, una Chicana! Welcome, welcome Senorita Jimenez.” (1040). The Secretary stated in Anglo pronunciation: “JIM-enez. Sancho. Que? Secretary. My name is Miss JIM-enez. Don't you speak English? What's wrong with you?”(1040). The secretary is judging the accent of Sancho. What she is expect from him? Culture is a key aspect of a human that reflects on their lifestyle, family, traditions and pulls together the external influences that play a role in how one chooses to live their life. For me, culture is something you collect throughout your lifetime. In my lifetime, I have been lucky enough to travel outside of the United States and meet people from all over the world. I have seen how people go about their daily routines in many different ways compared to mine. The main cultural influence that has been present in my life since day one is the closeness of my family. All my cousins are very close it has often odd when I hear about families with weak relationships and small size. Another influence that has shaped my behavior was my exposure of extreme poverty and extreme wealth while living in Mexico. Lastly, a cultural influence that has shaped my belief system is my education.
Culture is the overall moral belief, customs, language, and attitudes a person is brought and raised into. Daily, we are exposed to diverse and different cultures everyday which allow us to learn the different values and traditions each culture possess. The importance of observing and learning different customs is beneficial because it can help us better adapt and prevent misunderstandings when we communicate and interact with others. Hispanics and Americans are two huge cultures that have been sharing the same living space for years but are an example of two different civilizations. While both, Hispanics and Americans, share many similarities they both differ in recognition of religion, language,

Culture is a behavior that consists of several critical elements, such as language, religion, race and ethnicity, clothing and politics. Culture is what one does in his/her daily life. In order to understand others, we must first keep in mind that every culture carries its own set of values and assumptions. Culture is an evolving, ever changing civilization, which includes several different groups people. For immigrants, America is a land of opportunity; for others it is just the best country in the world because of its economic success and/or its democratic political system. Americans usually value independence a lot, believe in equal opportunity, and have a direct communication style. In exploring the
Minorities are almost always judged based on stereotypes, that are given to them based on what people see on the outside, and they don't always see the best in the minority's. What the salesman was saying was that the mexican in an almost all government board like the patrol board and school board. He even told her he is on a made up board, the taco quality control board. He said the mexican is on two by
The language accent in Mexican people has a particular significance. The accent comes with stress. The Mexican Citizens put effort to learn English as a second language. However, it’s understandable that the accent of an American won’t be the same. As another person who comes from outside of the United States, An Example; in the play “Los Vendidos” Valdez talks about the multiple stereotypes of Mexican
In the essay,” How to Tame a Wild Tongue,” Anzaldua talks about the Chicanos people are betraying their culture for speaking the dominant discourse and how it’s affecting their self identity. Anzaldua informs to the Chicanos that they are ruining the Chicanos Spanish by speaking another language, especially the English discourse. The reason for the people in Chicanos are translating the English discourse is because that their culture language is unheard to other people and they don’t want to be embarrassed. Thus, leaving the Chicanos people to speak the discourse as a neutral language, so they won’t feel embarrassed of their culture. But regardless, Anzaldua disapprove the idea of the Chicanos people to use the English dominant discourse instead of their own, not only damaging their culture, but
"The Pachuco is a symbol not of the guilt of an oppressed Mexican minority, but of a cancerous growth within the majority group which is gnawing at the vitals of democracy and American way of life. The Pachuco and his feminine counterpart, the 'Cholitas,' are spawns of a neglectful society - not the products of a humble minority people who are defenseless before their enforced humiliation" (Daniels 206).
A culture can be defined as a way of life of a group of people- their behaviors, beliefs, values that are passed along by communication and imitation from one generation to the next. It also includes the customs, arts, literature, morals/values and traditions of a particular society or group (Virginia Encyclopedia). Culture can also be considered as a way of thinking, behaving, or working that exists in places or organizations. This topic is of huge importance to our society mainly in the state of
Culture is the “System of values, beliefs and ways of knowing that guide communities of people in their daily lives” (qtd. In Rothstein-Fusch and Trumball 3). Every culture is different and unique in its own lifestyle. Culture is basically life itself. The short story “Woman Hollering Creek” by Sandra Cisneros is a clear example of these characteristics by bringing together life in Mexico and the United States. The reader gets the opportunity to view both sides of Cleofilas, the protagonist of the short story, culture as she moves to a new place with her new husband Juan Pedro. She enjoys watching telenovelas because she knows her life will never measure up to the lives of beautiful women from the
Over the years the Mexican Culture has been known to be very diverse compared to the United States. The Mexican culture undergoes different customs and traditions compared to the U.S,they have a very unique way of doing things. The Mexican Culture in my opinion is more put together then the U.S, they have fewer criminal problems and a better government. If you keep reading ahead I will be telling you about the beliefs of Mexicans and their way of doing things unlike the U.S or other countries. Believe it or not the Mexican culture is very diverse but they have a few similarities to the United States.
Honest Sancho and Secretary are interesting characters. However, Valdez cleverly embeds significant details in the “models” to “illuminate specific points about social problems”. The Farmworker is the first “model”. According to the script, he wears “4-ply Goodyear huaraches” and sleeps in “farm labor camps … old barns, old cars, riverbanks … [or] in the field” (43). The Farmworker represents Mexican migrant workers. From this character, Valdez shows the horrid living conditions of migrant workers. Hence, the author attempts to raise the issue to the audience and the general population so that they are aware of the inhumane treatment toward migrant workers. Furthermore, despite being a hardworking person, the Farmworker is rejected because he does not speak English. Thus, Johnny Pachuco is brought to sale. For Johnny, “an urban model” (44), is bilingual. Nevertheless, he is a thug. As Honest Sancho introduces, “he knife fights” (44) and “he steals” (46). Valdez presents this young man based on a typical stereotype of Mexican young males which is that they are usually in criminal gangs. With this character, Valdez implies his desire to bring the drug problem and criminal problems within the Mexican communities to light. The third “model” is the Revolucionario, or Early California Bandit
When comparing cultures, one must form a definition of what culture is. Culture can be easily defined as the social behavior and normality’s found in human societies. It can also be easily made up of a composed arrangement of educated conduct and thought designs. Culture is a sorted out framework since it includes many parts. Throughout the world, there are many cultures that are both very different and also very similar. "Culture encompasses religion, food, what we wear, how we wear it, our language, marriage, music, what we believe is right or wrong, how we sit at table, how we greet visitors, how we behave and one million other things." (Cristina De Rossi.)

Culture and society may have some common elements but the two are not the same; they are not identical.
I spoke with my friend, a co-worker, and a family member. The conversations were rich with different perspectives and ideas. My friend was born in Mexico and raised in the United States. Culture to him is anything related to his native country, Mexico. This includes traditions, custom, food, norms, and music. Indeed, he considers himself to have strong ties to the Mexican culture. He speaks Spanish, hangs out with Mexican friends, eats Mexican food, and listens to Mexican music. He is also proud of his background and culture. He said, “My culture defines who I am”.
