Losing weight is never an easy task to do; therefore, programs for weight loss are normally created to help an individual reach its target. In order for my roommate to increase his chances in loosing weight and making the football team, he would have to condition himself to excise and a diet. Within a month, my roommate would have to follow and modified his behavior based on the principles of operant conditioning. Although, losing weight could be a difficult task, through positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement and positive punishment he will be able increase his chances in making the football team. First of all, my roommate will need to adjust to having a positive reinforcement by increasing the behavior of running for 25 minutes. He
A weight loss program in a month is a hard obstacle to tackle. If a roommate is in need of help so that he can lose weight to make the football team, there are ways in which you can help. A behavior modification program can be set up to help the roommate. To begin, the principles of operant conditioning will get him started on his weight loss journey. In order for a successful program we need to use positive reinforcement, progress reports, and a schedule of reinforcement.
For my project I chose a good friend of mine and helping him focus on going to the gym. I know my friend has made attempts to go to the gym before but he struggled with feeling comfortable and with continuing the behavior. I would consider him in the action phases for purposes of the project as he had initiated the behavior before. I wanted to focus my project around going to the gym, in particular Planet Fitness. The guys model prides itself in being a “judgement free zone” for everyone. My goal was to use different behavior modification technique to not only make a change immediately, but one that could support and create sustainable change, with the hopes of going to the gym to become a habit. For the immediate time I used a 12-week time
This behavior change project has become a huge part of my everyday life. I lost sight of how important staying in shape affects my overall mental state along with my physical well-being. Having a life that consists of so many activities such as going to school, working, and maintaining a full and happy relationship with the people I care about is hard to balance with just making time for myself. That is why keeping this three day a week workout regime over the past five weeks has been so important; it made me realize that I can make time to focus on just working on myself, and in turn, improve all other aspects of my life. Realizing of course that there are many people in this world that have real life health problems that they seek professional help for. These changes in their lives require a system or a theory that must be applied to develop a strategic an organized way to regulate or change their behavior.
This past summer, I realized that I was getting a lot more exercise compared to the school year. Aside from the occasional basketball, volleyball, or run, I do not have a set schedule or exercise regularly. As a result, I found the Behavioral Change Project the perfect opportunity to set the goal for myself of being more physically fit by exercising daily. To do so, I aimed to either play sports (basketball or volleyball) for at least 1 hour or run at least 1 mile (which includes 5 minutes of stretching beforehand) as my daily exercise. Having the objectives established beforehand made it clear to me what I needed to do to reach my goal. I also wrote down goal-facilitating behaviors (planning to run with others, to work and study effectively
The psychologist B. F Skinner believed that “changes in behavior are the result of an individual’s response to events (stimuli) that occur in the environment” (All About Operant Conditioning, 2006, Para 2). The following paper will discuss a learning situation in which an exercise routine is thought. The paper will evaluate the application of instrumental conditioning to this learning situation. As part of the analysis the learning situation will be described, the paper will compare and contrast the concepts of positive and negative reinforcement as related to learning situation, and explain the role of reward and punishment in learning an exercise routine. Finally, the paper will explain which form of instrumental conditioning would be
Trying to lose weight and improve your health can be difficult, particularly when you don't have the tools, experience, and support to help you on your way. Here are four signs that you may benefit from the services as RCMC Medical Weight Loss Center.
“I think I may go out on the town today and see what kind of fun things I can do.” Mommy look at that fat girl, fat people shouldn’t be allowed out, quack quack waddle fat girl, hey shamu go back to the water. These are some of the things that I have endured and heard on a day-to-day when going out in public as an obese individual. Like myself, a lot of other obese individuals have embarked on many failed weight loss attempts only to gain instead of lose weight. Bariatric Surgery is a great lifelong tool to help aid in weight loss and manage the success;, however, many individuals shy away from the surgery because many health professionals only state the risks over the benefits. Bariatric surgery has become very popular in the United States, but there are many factors to consider such as the risks and benefits, success rates, and procedure options offered. Bariatric surgery has afforded many obese individuals a new lease on life. Medical doctors and insurance companies seem to be down playing the benefits as a way to keep patients with many obesity related ailments to keep them in business. The benefits that bariatric surgery has greatly outweigh the risks and allows for new beginnings.
Reducing the problem of obesity; there must be an organized educational, political and legislation movement that is supported at the community level. Information from evidence-based practices used by nurses, health care providers, and other collaborators like dieticians, physical therapists, and social workers help the client to achieve a more favorable outcome. These interventions focus on diet, exercise, and behavior modification should be encouraged by nurses. Giving the client the power to identify the factors that contribute to excess food intake, can help the client to eliminate or reduce causes. Establishing realistic weight loss goals and exercise / activity objectives like losing bodyweight 1-2 lb./week increase the likelihood of success, assessing the client’s knowledge and discuss well-balanced diet plans plays major role teaching about diet plans. Discussing behavior modification strategies, such as self-monitoring and environmental management can provide client is the reinforcement that is needed. (Pearson, 2015) Continuing assessment is necessary not only to evaluate the safety or weight loss strategies but also reinforce positive benefits of weight loss. Including families and other stakeholders, such as schools, parks, private partners and politicians at all levels, we can make the obesity issue a focus for change. (John, F., & Kirsten, P., 2014). For programs like this to be successful, outcomes should not
A behavior modification program is necessary for the 52 year old overweight man. Not following the behavior modification plan can cause both short term and long term problems for him. The short term consequences would be that Stan will lose his primary physician of 15 years and increase in clothing size which will result in purchasing a new wardrobe to fit comfortably in his clothes. Long term consequences include heart problems, obesity, daily problems with blood sugar and the increased likelihood of a stroke or even death.
Both Mr. William and I choose two weeks period to measure the actions. The reward would be experienced by Mr. William such as reduce the feeling of sluggishness and increase of energy from exercise regularly. If he follows through by limiting empty calorie snacks, it would be beneficial in his weight loss as well. As the counseling process progressing, my client would like to upgrade his reward by treating himself with a seasonal ticket to the game of his favorite football team. It is a great decision because the higher the reward, the harder he would try to accomplish his goals.
Weight management can be assisted through improvement in food and medical stuff, physical activity or behavioral change, with a combination of all three being most effective. Where possible, increased physical activity should be adopted, with 150-300 minutes of moderate activity, or 75-150 minutes of vigorous activity each week, which has been associated with improved health outcomes, irrespective of weight loss. The level of physical activity recommended will be dependent on an individual’s BMI, fitness levels, commodities and age.(Prof.hankey (2006))
While working on this project I have learned that physical fitness does not come easy. It takes commitment, time, and will power. Without these you can’t obtain physical fitness or maintain it. Physical fitness is not easy to gain nor is it easy to keep it. If it was then everyone would do it, but those who stick to their plan will gain enormous rewards and their life will be significantly better.
Our third week of the physical activity intervention has been the most successful so far out of the first two weeks. My group members and I were able to obtain much more data on student’s height and weight in the third week due to class rosters that were given to us by Ms. Moser to easily find and organize students in their physical activity class. My group members and I are doing well in our intervention and we met up to discuss on how our research project is going along and how everyone is doing in their part of the project. My group members and I only have one more week for the intervention, so a challenge for the last week of the intervention would be to promote and motivate the students to continue their engagement in physical activity after the program is over. If my group members and
The principles of operant conditioning could be used to decrease the occurrence of my friend’s unhealthy behavior, which generates a negative impact on his surroundings. I hope to increase the occurrence of healthy behaviors, such as peaceful conversations, fewer confrontations with others, and healthier relationships. Operant conditioning can accomplish this because his behavior can be influenced by specific consequences such as reinforcements and punishments. Currently, this undesired behavior has been occurring about two times a week.
Unfortunately, for most people gaining weight is much easier than losing weight. It is not uncommon for a person to start developing poor eating habits, and then they let their weight gain go too far and get out of control.
