In both Louis XIV rule and Democracy In America, religion is important in either supporting the authority of the king, such as Louis XIV, or protecting the liberty of the people from the majority, as in Democracy in America. Yet, the different use of religion in Louis XIV's rule and in Democracy In America ultimately explains why democracy has a universal impact, whereas Louis XIV is not entirely inexorable.
