Louisa Please Come Home Analysis

Louise went to her room where she tries to process the news. It is clear that she is sad, she knows that her husband was a good loving man. But then she recognized that she finally could be free, and she will be able to make her own life by her own decisions and desires.

Louisa is a minor character in the book Trouble by Gary D. Schmidt. Although she doesn’t have a main part in the story you get many mixed feeling from her. Louisa has mixed feelings on what happened to her brother, Franklin. “And as Henry watched, Chay looked straight at Louisa-who had also looked up and who was staring at him, her arms so tight around herself that she looked as if she was trying to crush her own heart(81).” As Chay walks out of the courtroom Louisa looks at him in an intense way.

A 64-year-old novelist, Stephanie Ericsson, does a great job explaining the reason and how people lie in her essay “The Ways We Lie.” Her essay is about different types of lies and the consequences of each type of lie which was first appeared in the Utne Reader as the cover article in January 1993. Initially, she seems to say lying is not a bad thing and it should be done in necessary times. However, she mentions different lies and where they should be used. According to Ericsson, people don’t realize how lying affects the lives of others (2). I, myself, consider Ericsson the best author I have ever seen. Thus, she uses first-person perspective and signifies that she is talking about herself in some cases. She targets an audience who are lying

She puts the essay into different categories as of the ways we lie. The essay was very well structured. This essay was very related to myself, because I am a good liar honestly. Sometimes I lie to protect others feelings, sometimes I lie to protect myself, sometimes I lie to make a joke, and sometimes I lie just to lie.

The first time she tells a lie in the poem is the place where she gets her clothes. She had told all her friends that she gets her clothes from Maison Blanche line number 13 and line 14. It says, “I could act like my homemade dresses came straight out the window of Maison Blanche.” She says the clothes are homemade which would be the truth, however she then goes on to say they are designer.

The novel will often drop an example of lying then later pick it back up again before mentioning at the end that it will be further explained later. The second chapter however clears up most of the confusion and has a streamlined narrative that helps the reader understand and break down the material. The second chapter analyzes the different ways someone can lie and uses the same example to show each and every way it can be done. The example is a married woman named Ruth is caught by her husband talking to her other lover on the phone. The author replays the same situation over and over again using different techniques of lying to play out each way Ruth can avoid making her husband aware of her affair. The author wisely uses the same example in this chapter to showcase lying and to show how vast lying is and the magnitude of ways you can lie. Ruth can play off her fear by simply lying that her fear was about something else, she could choose not to reveal anything, she could falsify the truth, she could conceal the truth, she could tell the truth in a sarcastic manner that makes it look like she is lying. The story starts with a woman trying to manage her busy life; struggling to meet all the demands of the day, such as; making it to a business meeting on time, paying bills, keeping up with her daughter, etc. She tells a few lies along the way without it having any effect on her conscience. The author points out how lying is almost impossible not to do; whether it be for good intentions, it is "nearly impossible" (Ericsson 359). Further into the story, the author states that there are a number of ways we lie and spends the rest of the story explaining the different types of lies that most of us can relate to.

The big meaning in the short story of T.C Boyle’s “The Lie” is that Lonnie feels very awkward about his situation. Everything starts in a morning in which Lonnie can’t bear his job and needs a break. He gets into a situation where he creates a little lie which gets very big with a kind of snowball effect. Lonnie’s relationship with the people around him plays a significant role in this story. However, Lonnie feels lost and is depressed because of the change that happened in his life.

She is a character who is loyal, yet she is also someone who is a perfectionist and still wants to be alone. Waiting 15 years to marry the love of her life, shows she has a charateristic of loyalty to herself and others. The narrator shows one exmaple of her loyalty when the text says, "she had been faithful to him all these years” (Freeman 472). This quote shows not only her loyalty to him, but the worth of value she has for committment. Even though she has a committment to him, this does not take into account the fact they have both changed since they last met 14 years ago. The narrator shows this when the text says,"fifteen years ago she had been in love with him at least she considered herself to be” (Freeman 472). This quote suggests Louisa may have at one time loved Joe, but that is no longer the case for either of them. Along with Louisa being loyal, she also tends to have a perfectionist side. The narrator shows this side of her many times. The narrator shows this when talking about Louisa's lettuce "which she has raised to perfection" (Freeman,469). The whole story shows how Louisa always needs ot have everything in tip top shape. This could lead the reader to infer Louisa may have an Obsessive Compulsive

In this short story, Louisa’s internal independence plays a major role in who she is as a woman. Mary E. Wilkins Freeman describes Louisa as an introvert because she is someone who enjoys being alone. She spends fourteen years of her life being isolated at home, waiting for her fiancé to come back from his job in Australia. During those years, she learns how to be by herself through the hard times and the pleasant ones “Louisa’s feet had turned into a path, smooth maybe under a calm, serene sky, but so strait and unswerving that it could only meet a check at her grave, and so narrow that there was no room for any one at her side” (Freeman 66). This demonstrates how she is so use to not having anyone by her side. This is why she creates her own path through all the dark times she had to face on her own. She did this because she wanted to ruin her sister’s wedding by running away and her family stopping the wedding. Another important detail is when Louisa first meets Mrs. Peacock she lied to her about her family. She told Mrs. Peacock that her mother was a widow, her sister just got married and she had a younger brother named, Paul.

She knew that the murderer was a man who was a member of the Grasshoppers’ cycling club. He also studied anatomy and had a strange kind of money bag made of human skin.
