In the movie Arrival, Linguistics Professor Louise Banks tries to decipher alien logograms to learn why the aliens have landed on Earth. She starts off trying to translate it through field research. Banks tries to teach interact with the aliens and teach them basic English words. Due to the complexity of language and the semantics of words in a phrase, Professor Banks has a hard time asking simple questions to the aliens. She analyzes the alien language through measuring different parts of each logogram. Although the heptopod language is not a real language, it still has a series of patterns.
