Louise Fili was born 1951 in Orange, New Jersey. She grew up in an Italian-American household and says that she “remembers carving letterforms into the wall above her bed at age three or four: Even then, she simply loved making letters.”(Danzico) Louise Fili developed her love of typography design while working in her college’s type shop. In high school, she taught herself calligraphy with a Speedball guide and an Osmiroid pen. Later she studied studio art at Skidmore College, but that’s where she discovered graphic design. “Her senior project was a hand-lettered Italian cookbook.”(Danzico) When she left Skidmor For New York City she finished her last semester at what is now called SVA(School of Visual Arts) She had a freelance assignment with Knopf where she started designing book and fell in love with it. Which allowed her to stay current and keep on doing beautiful work. While she was traveling in Europe she developed a style that she later applied to her American cover design work. She drew inspiration from everything around her from shop signs to used books. She was an art director for Pantheon books from 1978-1989. After that she created her own studio company in 1989 where she focused on food-related logos, restaurant identity and packaging. She has designed logos for restaurants including: La Vara, Mermaid Inn, Artisanal and the Pearl Oyster Bar. “Much of her work tends to be local New York establishments because her process requires her to be a sort of embedded designer.” She is quoted in The Art Sources as saying 'I keep my eyes and ears open for any and all visual cues that can inspire a graphic direction for the logo.
