In " the story A&P", John Updike mentions first sight love of the protagonist in Sammy a nineteen years old boy who works at the A&P store in north of Boston. It is a summer time there he saw three stunning bathing suits girls entering his store and he saw each of them has their own features and he impress by their looks and beautiful manners of movement they makes, especially the third one, he is in interest most, which he named her queenie. She is popular in her group. However, it is a little commotion and surprise to see girls wearing like this in the store. Due to, the A&P store is in the center of town and nowhere near the beach. At the same time, Sammy is full of joy and exiting that girls are come to him. Suddenly, Lengel the store manager is come and when he saw these girls are wondering by, wearing swimming suite. He immediately points to the girls and said wearing a bathing suit is not decent in public places. Although, quite the girl completes Lengel comment with embarrassed that all show on her face. At that moment, Sammy is imagined having high status party with queenies families. Beautiful peoples with gorgeous clothes! He remembered his parents’ low-level parties, lemonade and cheap beers. When the girls are in the process of leave, without second thought Sammy argues with Lengel that his behavior is unacceptable and he said he quit this job. By being able, to say that, he hopes girls admire his did, but it is not. Luger is a friend of Sammy's parents for years. Therefore, lengel gives Sammy a chance to reflect on his parents and life without a job, but Sammy folds the apron, drops the bow tie, and leaves the store with hope of meeting these girls outside.
