During the 1500’s many plays were written in a style called blank verse, this is very popular with the author William Shakespeare. Shakespeare’s style consisted of unrhymed iambic pentameter, a category of poetry that uses unrhymed lines and a definite meter, which is five sets of unstressed and stressed iambs. In his story “Romeo and Juliet” William Shakespeare profundity style of blank verse was very strong, by telling a story consisting of different versions of love he showed his adept ability. Romeo and Juliet having different families, and different problems, allowed for shakespeare's to demonstrate many types of love. Which then the audience could analyze and compare the differences between them, and possibly finding a relatability with the character’s feelings of love.
Furthermore Shakespeare's precocious ability to express love in his plays, have allowed him to develop an understanding of different types of love. Throughout the story Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare shows the love of friendship. Benvolio knows Romeo, he can tell that Romeo is feeling some type of pain, and being a friend wants to help. “ what sadness lengthens Romeo’s hours?” (I.i.160). Shakespeare's begins the story with an act of love, he uses Benvolio and Romeo friendship to portray how true friendship is shown. Benvolio cares for Romeo and wants him to feel better, real friends help each other, this is the statement that Shakespeare is trying to state. Mercutio may seem to be against Romeo, but that
Love is an emotion many-if not all- desire for in their life, but should a person’s past flings call that love into question? Romeo had strong feelings for two different people in Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet, one being Rosaline and the other being Juliet. Romeo’s feelings for Rosaline were more of an infatuation than love, but this does not weaken the credibility of his love of Juliet. There are three reasons that must be taken into account when talking about the connection between his infatuation with Rosaline and his love for Juliet. Many people have infatuations at some point in their lives before they meet someone they truly love, he learns many things from his infatuation that help to deepen his
The emotion of love is an incredibly complex feeling, as displayed in Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare.
Teacher and classmates, A few weeks ago, I questioned Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet wondering why, why is this literature still prominent in today's society? The foreign tongue it is written in, the seemingly basic and boring plot and the lack of action all combined being regarded as one of man’s greatest achievements didn't quite equate. However through my studies of the question, How effectively does Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet shape our notion of love, I realised. Throughout the text lies defining moments of romantic, fickle and fraternal love and the complexity of the text allows for both interpretation while maintaining relatability. However our perception of love, the strong feeling of affection, has differed immensely since 1595. Romeo and Juliet, a story over four centuries old is the foundation of love and romance throughout history.
Though some may simply know romantic love as an intense bond between individuals devoted to one another, its effects in reality are not always as beautiful as the concept. Particularly when it is frowned upon by society and the people involved also swim against the current, the consequences of this type of love can be damaging to others outside the romance. In William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the actions of the young lovers in their desire to be together not only steer the course of their lives, but also those of their friends, families, and other citizens in the city. The unfortunate series of events following Romeo and Juliet’s choice to reach beyond traditional gender roles, a standard courtship, and their established social networks reveal the importance of complying with these norms. By highlighting the chaos in Verona on the path to Romeo and Juliet’s eventual demise, Shakespeare suggests that intense romantic love that threatens relationships and expectations in the established social order leads to tragedy.
How is Love presented in Romeo and Juliet and two poems from the Shakespeare Literary Heritage
What is love? Is it an object? Is it a feeling? Is it even attainable? Love is everything, it is an object, it is an emotion, and it cannot be bought, stolen, given. Love can only be found. Love is discovered in the most unthinkable places during the most unimaginable times. It can never be predicted who you fall in love with or when you do but all you do know is that you are in love and you would give anything for that person, and for your love to always stay resilient through all other obstacles and distractions. In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Montague’s and Capulet’s are know and expected to hate each other until the miracle of love presented its self. Romeo is a Montague and Juliet is a Capulet. They both fell in love when
The affection between Romeo and Juliet was not genuine, rather it was lustful. This is because Romeo fell in love immediately when he first laid eyes on Juliet. Romeo and Juliet were also too young to find true love, and they only met each other a couple of times. To start off, Romeo was shattered about the fact Rosaline left him. He thought that Rosaline was his “true love”. In act 1 scene 1 of Romeo and Juliet, line 158, Romeo says “Out of her favor, where I am in love”. In other words, Romeo is saying that he loves her but she does not. However, when Romeo saw Juliet at the Capulet party, he instantly fell in love and had erased all other thoughts from his mind. Romeo cherished Juliet’s body and did not bother to look at her personality.
According to dictionary.com, love is defined as "a profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person. " To infatuate is "to inspire or possess with a foolish or unreasoning passion, as of love." Both words might be similar in definition, but to me, they are completely opposite. To me, the words differ because of the desires they each imply.
“O happy dagger! This is thy sheath; there rust and let me die (1141).” Juliet then stabs herself. What if this scene could be rewound and the message had reached Romeo? The whole tragedy, could have been reversed. Better yet, if love was removed from the context, the story would be have turned into a sappy romance. William Shakespeare wrote “Romeo and Juliet”, to be a tragedy. Shakespeare based the story on three topics, love, infatuation, and hatred. Indefinitely love is the foundation of them all. The role of love in the play can be found through distinguishing the difference between love and infatuation, considering the characters ages and social status, and the role of hatred.
In Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet, the gravitational power of Romeo and Juliet’s love is stronger than any of their families' hatred. This is first shown when Juliet discovers that Romeo is a Montague, revealing that “[her] only love, [is] sprung from [her] only hate” (I.5.147). Juliet knows that this relationship is problematic, but she still pursues Romeo. She is set on being with him, no matter what that relationship may cost. In the end, their relationship costs her something irreplaceable, her life. When Juliet awakes to find Romeo's corpse, she hopes that “some poison [hangs] on [Romeo’s lips],”(V.3.166) so she can join him in death. Juliet does this because for her, there is no life worth living without her Romeo. Their deaths were
Juliet’s lust for power ( That's a very interesting idea. I only thought she had the boy-girl kind of lust. ) was destined to destroy her relations with Romeo. Capulet forces (betroths) Juliet to marry Count Paris, a man she does not love. When she refuses to marry him, Capulet threatens his daughter and says, “…get thee to church o' Thursday, or never after look me in the face”. This causes Juliet to take her own actions against his (her?) father’s will. She does not want to marry Paris and so she begins to manipulate those close to her in order to get what she wants. To Friar Lawrence she says to him, “I long to die if what thous speakest speak not of remedy”. However by doing so she
Although formally defined as “a strong feeling of affection” by the Oxford Dictionaries, love is rather considered a broad and equivocal subject to many. Perception of affection may differ for anyone, especially for those who had lived in Shakespeare’s time, roughly equivalent to the 1500’s. “Romeo and Juliet”, the novel which Shakespeare had published in 1597, reflects various themes of love to the readers. The tragedy presents several different aspects of love such as love at first sight, the commitment and devotion for love, and teenage love.
The view on love is different through different people’s view. In Romeo and Juliet by WIlliam Shakespeare, a genre based on tragedy, talks about how Benvolio tells Romeo if he is overcome by love then love will hurt you. The one’s you love the most will hurt you the most. Benvolio, Romeo’s cousin, empathizes Romeo when he gets rejected by Rosaline. Benvolio tells Romeo,” “Alas that love, so gentle in his view, Should be so tyrannous and rough in proof!” (1.1. 174-175). What Benvolio is telling Romeo is that sometimes love pretends to be a gentle emotion when it can be really oppressive and harsh. In addition, this evidence supports the topic sentence because it gives a negative feedback when you see how Benvolio views love and says it can
Romeo and Juliet is a plat set in Verona, which is about two young, star-crossed lovers, whose love was immediately destined for destruction and tragedy. This ending was anticipated, particularly due to the conflict conveyed between the two feuding families-the Montague’s and the Capulet’s. Due to this, it is undeniable that the theme of hate, conflict and fate are significant in the play as the plot is partially driven by these key ideas. However, the strong and overpowering theme of love is a factors which overrides and has the ability to manipulate the outcomes and events within the play.
What do these sources say about how males first express their romantic feeling? “Michelle is a love ballad performed by The Beatles. “Michelle” is a love ballad about a man who’s love can not be expressed because of a language barrier, but the man continues to be optimistic and affectionate towards his love.
