Lowering The Cost Of College

College tuition is very expensive and many people are unable to attend due to the overall cost of tuition, books, room and board. The high price of a college education is unfair to the bright students who have limited resources. These students are at a disadvantage because of lack of funds. The United States should find a way to provide free tuition to all students who want an education.

A lot of people will argue, that college is too expensive. Not everyone can go to college, for financial reasons. Also, they may get into college, but end up having to leave because they cannot afford the remaining balances; or, they received financial aid, but end up having to take out loans they are going to be paying back forever. It is like once they graduate they will be working mostly to pay off their student loan debt. This also discourages some students. In some cases, they will not even take the initiative to try because it is so costly. I do not understand why it cost so much to want to better yourself, and possibly put us in debt for the rest of our life just to receive a higher education. Not only has the cost of college risen over a period of time, but it continues to go up. Yes, they have alternatives for paying student debts, but what if you do not qualify? Lastly, you are not guaranteed a job just because you graduate and have a college degree(s).

College can be looked at as a life investment. It is an investment for the future of your life in hopes that it will pay off later in life. College is expensive, but can be affordable for all of those who try. In 2008, Students who applied to attend a four-year college received an estimated average of $5,400 in financial aid and state grants (“Trends in College Pricing”). Many high school students dream of attending college in order to attain more knowledge, yet so many people fail to realize the cost of college. Attending college, currently, is nearly impossible to do without being in some sort of financial debt or seeking out government help. College tuition is an expensive entity to pay for and not many people have the luxury of having college being completely paid for, however, so many people that have previous experience like teachers, counselors, and parents, want students to pursue this expensive entity so their future is brighter. Why is being a college student becoming a luxury that fewer people can afford and attend to? Factors like the actual cost for college tuition, costs for higher education, the working class and their difficulties of paying for other things in addition to tuition, proposals from our government, and tuition remission, is when we begin to see how big of a problem tuition costs actually are. School is an important opportunity that I have taken like many of my teachers, parents, and government have told me to take, but I still struggle paying for it; if school is a value that people should be taking advantage of, tuition needs to be more affordable in order to do so.

For some people college does not seem to cost an arm and a leg, but to most people “Tuition numbers can be eye-popping, and student debt has increased significantly” (Leonhardt). Money is normally the main reason that people do not go to college. Most Americans do not go to college because “College is too expensive for most Americans to afford” (Pew). College is not cheap. College is so expensive that many “students are leaving college with a substantial debt burden” (Pew). People can have debt from college for many years. College is very expensive.

If you knew how the presidential candidates felt about issues that affect you, would it change the way you vote? All of the presidential candidates have different opinions on issues, and the way they address the issues that are important to you, change the way you feel about them. Some issues that would change my vote are; limited work hours, lowered college tuition, and increased cancer research. I think work hours should be limited for health precautions and family needs. Lowering college tuition would benefit millions of students by starting their lives debt free. As a country, more cancer research is needed to find new treatments and cures that can save the lives of our citizens. I believe the democratic candidates support my opinions and

Bernie Sanders, senator of the state of Vermont said, “The cost of college education today is so high that many young people are giving up their dream of going to college, while many others are graduating deeply in debt” (“Brainy Quote”). Each year students take out loans to pay for a college education. Is it really necessary? They are just going to be a statistic. I believe everyone should not go to college. College is not for everyone.

Paying for college should not be the hardest part. Lowering the cost of tuition would lead to less student debt and allow more students to attend college, which would increase the amount of educated people in the general public. Due to the fact that a college degree is necessary for most people to achieve success in today’s society, it should be cheaper or even free. Many entry-level jobs won’t hire people without a degree, and having one gives graduates more options.

Would you like to become a well educated person? Would you like to have a stable job? Would you like to make enough money to be able to do leisure activities as you please? Do you want to be able to support a family someday? All of this requires getting a higher education and attending college. The already high and rising cost of tuition makes affording college extremely difficult for most people. This expensive tuition has spiraling effects. These include high school graduates choosing to not attend college, college graduates left in debt for many years, and a troubling effect on the economy.

My proposal for altering an area of the United States government is by lowering tuition rates for incoming college students by centralising the fixed rate for tuition. College tuition has caused an inflation to 500% in cost since 1985 (Granderson), and the average cost for college tuition in this state, Texas is "$3,951[not including room or board]" per semester (Dolan). this isn't including the tuition rate for out of state students which doubles the cost. I believe by lowering the tuition rates would help students financially after and during college and would create less stress for the students. To most people college is their goal at succeeding in life. Whether you get a scholarship or pay yourself, college is expensive. To some it is a waste of time and money due to the fact that, graduates are not getting their money's worth in their degree, they are burdened by student loans, and their degree does not guarantee them a job. With that and a growing tuition rate, most people can't afford a higher education. College is simply not worth the cost anymore.

For most people going off to college will place them in large amounts of debt. That is if they are unfortunate in receiving some type of scholarship. College is expensive because students have to pay tuition, housing, and for their books. One way colleges could cut down cost for students is to make textbooks free. Textbooks should be free for college students because they are expensive, they are becoming useless, and producing them is bad for the environment.

Over the years, college fees have gradually risen for high school graduates. It’s been said that most jobs with a college degree earn almost double of what a high school graduate would earn. Many people all over the country have been unable to go to college because of these high fees for education. Some people think that your future shouldn’t be controlled by the amount of money you pay. If these fees continue to increase, then no one will be able to attend college. Higher education for free will increase productivity within students because they can get a good job, college is now a prerequisite, and college worthy jobs have great salaries.
