Loyalty: An Analysis Of Tomi's Friends And Family

Tomi’s friends and family are the very definition of loyalty. They all did not have to help him if they were not up to it, but they were loyal to him and wanted to be of service. Three examples of this are Rico, Grandpa Joji, and Jake’s acts of kindness and devotion.

To begin with, Grandpa Joji has gone above and beyond to assist Tomi in his Taiyo Maru project. One of his actions was that he provided the compressor needed for the group of boys to inflate the pontoons. On page 181, it states , “Your grandfather worked very hard to get that here, you know.’ I turned to Ojii-chan, who grunted. ‘That’s where you were when I was searching for you?’
‘Hnnn.’
‘He had to bring it in a wheelbarrow,’ Fumi said. ‘It took him two days.’ “ This small portion of the text shows that Grandpa Joji went out of his way to haul the heavy compressor in a wheelbarrow to Tomi. Even though it took him two days, he still followed through with what he needed to do to support his grandchild. Surely, Grandpa Joji was not the only character who wished to see Tomi succeed. …show more content…

Tomi wanted to help Sanji’s family by repairing and selling his truck for Sanji’s wife and he asked Jake to do the job. On page 144, it says, “ He propped it up and stuck his head in, poking around every grimy part in that engine. ‘If the fuel line is clear, and the pump works...get a new battery...we can probably get this thing going. Then I can drive it home and clean up the engine, and you kids can clean up the wheels and tires, and then we can sell it.” Jake came to inspect the car for Tomi and offered to make the truck functional for free despite the fact that he was trying to save up money for his own car.
