The pure excitement of dreams and even more concentrated terror of nightmares is a gamble that everyone has taken. Whether you like it or not the entire population of people on this earth require sleep in order to fuel themselves in their lives. Dreams no matter how vivid are still just dreams, though, right? Some dreams may be better however this is susceptible to perspective. In other words, maybe you like a scary dream or that violent dream that the average person wouldn't enjoy. Dreams, however, can be so vivid they can appear to transcend the barrier we define as reality and fiction, and these make those kinds of dreams truly terrifying. Lucid dreams are phenomena where the dreamer is conscious of dreaming and controls the dream to bend the events to their liking. I have had a few of these as well. I prefer lucid dreams rather than sleep terrors due to the control you have over lucid dreams, sleep paralysis represents the loss of control as you can do nothing but observe and feel. One of my lucid dreams occurred in 4th grade when I dreamt of being on a playground and then I realized I was dreaming and was able to bend the fabric of everything in the dream and could fly, I was a god amoungst peasants who couldn't do a quarter of what I could. I felt empowered and in control, a feeling that was foreign to a younger me and still is to a more updated and senior me. I don't have many dreams anymore, and in many ways, it would seem as if my life lost the magic it had a little too early. I knew that my life had taken a turn down a more miserable path when these dreams that I looked forward to every night stopped coming and night terrors ensued as their replacement. I never felt so awful, I woke up to a hell I hated and went to sleep only to be tortured. It didn't feel like it was worth the effort to continue caring anymore. In this dream stage, we perform superhuman features that would be impossible when we’re awake. While a person dreams, these wonderful things become a temporality reality. Researchers says that a average person dreams four to six times a night(insert). Many people dream every night without even realizing that their dreams can be controlled. Others might not give too much care about the dreams that they might experienced. Lucid dreaming can turn scary dreams into happy dreams, or happy dreams into more relaxed ones. This method of dreaming can provide the dreamer endless ways to control their subconscious which can provide enjoyable experiences.

A dream is a number of thoughts, sensations, and pictures people see in their minds while they sleep. Generally there are two kinds of dream; good dreams and bad dreams also known as nightmares. For the past year, about every three to four months I have a reoccurring nightmare; after having this dream many times, I think it shows an underlying insecurity/fear that I have and need to conquer and/or deal with.
The US National Library of Medicine defines a nightmare as, “a bad dream that brings out strong feelings of fear, terror, distress, or anxiety.” A dream, then, is a series of thoughts or images that happen during the rapid-eye movement (REM) stage of sleep. Research has shown that the biggest amount of common adult dreams are in a category known as “pseudonightmarish” dreams, which is essentially any dream of being in trouble or in danger, being alone and/or trapped, something you don’t have control over (like losing your teeth), or facing natural forces.

Prior to this project being assigned, I always thought that dreams were just your brain organizing or processing information throughout the night, but now that I have been researching my strange dreams, I have realized that they correlate to my life. My dreams mostly consist of disappearances, forgetfulness, disagreements, and individuals morphing into other beings. A majority of my dreams included friends and classmates, occasionally I would dream about strangers. I have not had recurring dreams, but what amazes me is that all of my dreams so far have had similar meaning when I research them.
Holzinger, G. Klosch, and B. Saletu (2015) at the Institute for Consciousness and Dream Research involved an initial forty participants, thirty females and ten males, ranging in age from twenty to fifty-nine. All participants were volunteers recruited through unspecified media (Holzinger et al., 2015). The only pre-requirement, as stated in the advertisement, was for participants to be experiencing frequent nightmares at least twice a week (Holzinger 2014). In addition, participant’s nightmares had to fit the institutes definition as ‘recurrent awakening from sleep with recall of intensely disturbing dream mentation’s and were accompanied by dysphonic emotion’ (p. 355). Prior to acceptance to the study, all participants were required to go through a screening process to eliminate any person with additional sleep behavior disorders, excluding anyone experiencing sleepwalking or night terrors and anyone suffering from REM sleep behavior disorder, epileptic seizures, or psychotic symptoms. After passing all screenings, participants were randomly assigned to two groups; group A: Gestalt therapy group (GTG) and group B: Gestalt and lucid dreaming therapy group (LDG) where each group had twenty members.
In (Spoormaker, V.I. et al., 2003), it was their primary goal to investigate the effects of lucid dreaming on nightmares. Therefore, their hypotheses states that lucid dreaming would decrease nightmare frequency along with their other variables, trait/state anxiety, and improve quality of the participants sleep. In this experiment it was found at the 2-month follow up that nightmare frequency had indeed decreased, while quality of sleep had increased only slightly. As for state and trait anxiety, there were no changes. Within this study lucid dreaming seemed to be effective in reducing nightmares however, how effective it was is not clear since it did not change the other variables quite as significantly. Everybody dreams during his lifetime. It is a part of human nature that we experience almost everyday. Dreams can be lost memories, past events and even fantasies that we relive during our unconscious hours of the day. As we sleep at night, a new world shifts into focus that seems to erase the physical and moral reality of our own. It is an individual's free mind that is privately exposed, allowing a person to roam freely in his own universe. What do dreams mean? Where do they come from? There are many theories in the world about dreams, and what they mean, but it all depends on the person. Many people with BPD have vivid nightmares, causing them to lose more sleep and even develop a fear of sleeping. In 1913, Frederik Van Eeden published a book titled, “A Study of Dreams” (Turner). He went into detail about lucid dreams, and how it improves a person’s sleep. He named the deepest stage of sleep one could experience “lucid dreaming.” He defined it as, “the reintegration of the psychic functions is so complete that the sleeper remembers day-life and his own condition, reaches a state of perfect awareness, and is able to direct his attention, and to attempt different acts of free volition” (Turner). People can become fully aware that they are dreaming, and are in control, the mind relaxes completely, making it the deepest most desirable stage of sleep. It was not discovered and confirmed until 2009, by a German study conducted at the Neurological Laboratory in Frankfurt, that brain activity significantly increased during lucid dreams (Turner). This time is extremely important for people’s mental health.
