The book does not give an exact location of where the story took place. From what I gathered throughout the book the Garner family lives in a large wooded area so they can raise farm animals. For most of the book Luke’s home is the only setting and sometimes he went to his friend Jen’s house secretly.
The main character of the book is Luke Garner. He is a 12-year-old boy with brown hair and brown eyes. There is a law in his city where you can have 0-2 kids. If you have more, the population police will take your kid and put you in jail. Luke is a third child which makes him illegal. Next, Luke’s mother started working at the factory to make more money to support her family. Then, Luke was restricted to his room. He couldn’t go anywhere but his room. As he was searching for ways to look outside he found a small vent that allowed him to look out. When he was looking out the window, he noticed Jen also looking out a small window. Next, he came to a decision to go over to Jen’s house. When they were talking Jen told Luke about the rally. The rally is kind of like a protest for shadow children. Jen went with the rest of the shadow children. When he went to Jen’s house the next day, Jen’s dad told him she had got shot and killed by the population police. Luke was very sad. The population police came to Jen’s house to talk to her dad while Luke was there and Jen’s dad had to hide him. He hid inside a closet under some blankets. After that, Jen’s dad got Luke a fake I.D. so that he could go live a normal life somewhere else. Next, he went on living a normal life as Lee

In this book a boy named Haroon and a boy named Jay get a point of view. Jay is white, kind of a jock, and on the football team. Haroon is brown, smart and on the Reach for the Top team(which is like a team that answers trivia and competes with other schools). It all starts off when the school goes on a lockdown where police are rushing in the school with dogs and bombarding the hallways. Jay and his friends Kevin and Steve go on the rooftop of the school thinking it is just a regular drill, but then they look down and see a bunch of police cars and they see police that look like swat teams. They see down that the police has taken 2 brown kids with handcuffs. When they go back down the principal makes an announcement telling all students to leave the building immediately.
self. Luke has to deal with the reality of his mother’s death well in prison; he receives the news through a letter. What went through Luke’s head was a mystery but whatever it was it made him want to escape the prison. He tries to escape 3 times and during the third time, Dragline joins him; he later gets shot and is taken to the prison hospital instead of the regular hospital which was much closer because it was the Captains decision. In the end it didn’t show whether he lived, but his mother’s death had caused all this. Another thing that Luke had to face was also wanted to be free. Luke is locked up in the prison with a sentence of two years; he is forced to do labour in the heat during the weekdays. Psychologically humans do not like to be confined which Luke is, because of this he also tries to escape because he wants freedom, but fails. Chief Bromden, a protagonist/narrator of the story has to deal with being lost in the fog. “It’s rolling in thicker than I ever seen it before” (Kesey 133). He is in the mental state where he thinks that the ward uses fog machines on the patients, eventually later in the story he is freed from the fog. He is only freed once he became more active in the ward and when he analyzed McMurphy. McMurphy wants to be free from the ward. “It’s interesting to me that you bums didn’t tell me what a risk I was running, twisting her tail that way. Just because I don’t like her ain’t a sign
