In this section of the novel, Lullabies for Little Criminals, it introduces the falling action, which ends with the resolution, and brings a positive change upon both the main characters, Baby and Jules. In the beginning, situational irony occurs when Baby ends up like a bum as if she previously described Jules as, and she has a flashback of him in withdrawal that helps her to cope with living on the streets. Once someone tells her that Jules is looking for her, she starts having flashbacks of Felix, Xavier, and Jules, the happiest moments of her life, as she roams the streets. Another example of a theme is introduced, that although she is exposed to adulthood at a young age, children will stay children, and she cannot stay away from her father

She smoothes over Sofia's betrayal of the family, her running away and fighting with her father, by calling it lucky that she ended up with such a loving husband and a beautiful blonde baby. Her story about the thieves who got caught the night Sofia was born similarly reflects her desire to look on the brighter side of things. She needs this positive attitude to craft positive family stories out of unfortunate events.

Hattie is afraid to answer. The bank has given her three days to pay up the mortgage, or the struggling family will be evicted. Frank’s not working had really had an influence on their mortgage payments and this has affected the telephone manners of the entire household and this is as result of poverty. After refusing to pick up the call, Hattie heard someone opening her door and it was no one else than Wallie coming home that late in the night. Due to family problems Wallie had started engaging in the selling of dope on the street at night and thought that is the rhythm of life. This experience demonstrates her lack of innocent thoughts, since an innocent child would never ask that question. When Baby asks a boy named Johnny if he would be able to find her some “magic mushrooms”, his response demonstrates how young she really is. He makes fun of her, asking “Are you not just out of diapers?” (76). This quotation shows how she asks questions a twelve year old should never ask, but it also shows how other people see her as a young, innocent child when she really is not. She is not taken seriously by Johnny or any of the people who are older than her, apart from the drug dealers. Consequently, the fact that Baby is exposed to drugs at a young age combined with her early drug use lead to the disintegration of her innocence.
Porter begins the story with Miranda and her brother Paul exploring a graveyard while out hunting. As they continue with their hunt, Paul shoots a rabbit that is about to give birth. This moment is an epiphany for young Miranda as she understands the meaning of rebirth and the cycle of life and death. Miranda later reflects upon this incident years later in a foreign city’s busy bazaar and is reminded of the event that transformed her from an innocent child to a more experienced and knowledgeable young woman.

Experiencing further unstable environments, these children are forced to move from one foster home to another. They rarely develop meaningful relationships and constantly endure lack of care and protection by adults. She, too, became a ward of the county battling to find a stable home, constantly being placed in unstable environments, environments that do not encourage any achievement. When her situation becomes untenable, she goes AWOL, like Olivia, refusing to return to county supervision. Corwin masterfully frames the problem that wards, like Olivia and Sabreen, face when they feel that going back into the system is not an option. The additional struggles can be seen through Olivia and Sabreen accepting jobs with long hours in order to make enough to pay their bills. The responsibility on taking care of themselves financially detracts from their studies, which quickly can become a vicious, never-ending cycle.
