The tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet is thought by many to be one of the greatest romance stories in history. Was their fondness for each other true love or was it merely lust? Romeo and Juliet “fell in love” at first sight and wanted to be married within two hours. Is two hours really long enough to get to know someone that well? Studies show that it takes up to seven years to fully get to know someone, not two hours. Romeo and Juliet wanted to partake in sexual relations with each other. Some of their dialogue in the play proves to be true. At one point, Juliet complained that she had yet to enjoy the rewards of marriage saying “Gallop apace…/ lovers can see to do their amorous rites…/It best agrees with night…/O’ I have bought the mansion of a love/ But not possessed it; and though I am sold,/ Not yet enjoyed.” (Act 3 …show more content…

The whole relationship they share is rushed. Romeo apparently fell in love with Juliet upon seeing her and proclaimed that he wanted to spend eternity with her. The moment before he saw her, he proclaimed his love for Rosaline who had just recently broke his heart. He said that if he sees anyone more beautiful, that his eyes are lying and to let his “tears become fires/ And eyes burned.” (Act 1 Scene 2 88-91). As soon a he spotted Juliet, Rosaline completely left his mind. If he can forget about a girl whom he was so in love with so quickly, who’s to say that he was actually in love with her? If he can decide his love so quickly, how does he know that he will not fall out of love with Juliet immediately? Romeo and Juliet also acted selfishly throughout the play, not taking into consideration the matters of life and death. Romeo killed his cousin Tybalt in an instant, not thinking about the consequences that would be to come that could affect his relationship with Juliet. After
