For this week’s assignment, I have decided to focus on the lynx population in today’s world. Lynx are mainly discovered in moist, boreal forests that have cold and snowy winters. They also populate habitats that have high concentration of their preferred prey: the snowshoe hare. There are two species of lynx widely inhabiting North America namely Canada Lynx and Bobcats. Canada lynx populate primarily in the boreal forests of Canada and Alaska, while Bobcats are found mainly in the temperate zones. Bobcats are normally discovered throughout southern Canada, the United States continentals and northern Mexico.
The hunting pressure towards Lynx population is increasing due to their extremely popular thick and smooth fur. Illegal and uncontrolled hunting have caused both lynx species to have lesser individuals in their population.

Big cats species include lions, tigers, jaguars, cheetahs and many more. Big cat species exist in wide-ranging habitats including the savannas, tropical rain forests, mangrove swamps and boreal forests. The big cat populations are declining as the result of human threats. For the last thousands years, human populations are increasing at an unprecedented rate. The increase in human populations has caused the big cats population to encounter an ongoing poaching, loss of habitat, and pollutions.
For the family of bears, I am focusing on the two most popular species from this family namely brown bears and grizzly bears. Brown bears are found in many continents including Asia, Europe and North America. Brown bears have the broadest scopes of habitat as compared to other bear species. On the other hand, the habitat of grizzly bears ranges from Alaska to Mexico and it can be as far as east and western shores of Hudson Bay. The grizzly bears are listed as threatened in United States and Canada. They are also listed as threatened by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife

We looked first at the relationship between the wolf population and the moose population. From about 1960 to 1970, the wolf population remained fairly consistent at about 20 to 25 wolves. During this time, the moose population grew steadily from 500 to over 1200. The next 10 years saw a doubling of the wolf population to 50. This same 10 years saw a decrease of the moose population from over 1200 to over 800. Then in 1980 began a two year drastic decline in the moose population, which was brought down to 15. For the rest of the decade, the moose population remained quite low at numbers near 20. During the 1980s, the moose population doubled again from around 800 to
They were once found in different parts of North America ranging from Northern Mexico to Southern Canada. During the early and mid 1900s their populations in many Mideastern and western states of the United States of America reduced because they were hunted because of their high demand of fur. However, in the 1970s the international law began to protect them thus, reducing their high rate of decline (Hansen, 2006).
This species of wild cats has not been confirmed in the United States in nearly three decades. Although, there have been quite a few unconfirmed sightings. A cat of the lowlands, not generally found above 6500 feet, the Gulf Coast Jaguarundi occupy a wide range of both open and closed habitats – from dry scrub, swamp and savannah woodland to primary forest. A factor that is used to establish habitat appropriateness is access to dense ground vegetation. Of all of the New World felines, the Jaguarundi are the most adaptable in its ability to occupy diverse
Bobcat also scientifically known as Lynx Rufus is most common in the United States, but it is also common in Northern Mexico and Southern Canada. I had the opportunity to observe this animal in Northern Mexico where I learned a lot of things about it. I selected Lynx Rufus because of their uniqueness in different areas and the fact that they remain a threatened species and, therefore it is important to get more information about it.
The population of Canada Lynx in the US are very low placing them on the endangered species list since March of 2000. Lynx are spread across 48 US states, including Minnesota, Wyoming, Alaska and Washington with Washington having the largest population. Various studies have been conducted in hopes of finding the reason for population decline in Lynx. Canada lynx appear to have multiple similarities to the bobcat, however Lynx have tufted ears, large back legs and short black tipped tails. The species also has large, rounded feet that act as a snowshoe to provide them easy travel in snow.
Global temperature increases and associated increases in precipitation in northern Nova Scotia will likely have detrimental impacts on already threatened species. The Canadian Lynx population is decreasing quickly due to human hunting for its fur and its habitats being destroyed forcing them to continuously migrate north. They have evolved to thrive in snow cover and cold temperatures with their large snowshoe-like paws and thick fur, which gives them an advantage to capture prey compared to other predators such as coyotes or bobcats ("Threats To Lynx" 2012, Hoving et al. 2003). The lynx is a specialist predator focusing on the snowshoe hare as its primary source of food. The hare and the lynx have a very interconnected population cycle that lasts roughly 10 years (Yan et al. 2013). Hares experience large fluctuations in their population cycle based on a number of factors that influence the ecosystem. When hare populations are in decline, in periods where nature must regenerate, the lynx population is also shown to decrease, and vice versa with an approximate two year lag period for the lynx (("Lynx-Snowshoe Hare Cycle | Environment And Natural
Lynx Rufus, commonly known as the bobcat, can be found in all the diverse habitats of Arkansas. They get their name from their tail, which is short and appears to be "bobbed." Bobcats are nocturnal, therefore rarely seen by humans. According to National Geographic, they prowl through most of North America and can adapt easily in different environments such as swamps, forests, deserts, and sometimes even suburban areas ("Bobcats"). Bobcats are ferocious predators, being able to kill game much larger than them, although they tend to eat smaller prey. Most of these cats are solitary and occupy about 25 square miles during their life. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission states that mothers go into dens when birthing her litter. The cubs are born
American black bears are the most common bears found in North America. They can be seen in at least 40 of the 50 states, Canada, and part of Mexico. Florida and Louisiana each have their own subspecies of the traditional black bear that make up small sections of the entire population.
The Ursus Arctos otherwise known as the grizzly bear lives in North America around Northern Canada, Alaska, Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho. A grizzly bear lives in the wild and hunts for its food such as fish, deer, elk, or any other animal. They live inside of caves for protection from the weather, they will also live under trees or anything that will provide them shelter. I believe that grizzly’s have evolved into animals that can survive in many climates and environments.
“The killer which overcomes its prey in a single bound.” The definition of ‘yaguar’, the Indian origin of the word Jaguar. Due to natural habitat loss, the largest cat in America is slowly, but surely becoming extinct with a mere count of 15,000 said to be left. Bi-national conservation efforts have been successful at protecting a small population of 80 to 120 cats in the remote mountains of Sonora, Mexico bordering Arizona. This population is the largest of three known to remain in Sonora, and is the last hope for recovery in the United States.
Mexican repatriation involved forceful deportation of Mexicans and Mexicans American from the United States. The enforcers of the deportation branded it as repatriation movement to make it seem that Mexicans and Mexicans Americans were doing so willingly. The federal government pressure to move the families of Mexican origin back to their mother country mainly came from county and city governments. However, claims that all these individuals were Mexican were invalid. It is because more than seventy percent of these persons were American citizens since they were born in America, and others had intermarried and started families there (Calderón, pg 221, 1998).

The jaguar is the largest cat in the Americas. The jaguar has a compact body, a broad head and powerful jaws.Jaguars can be very dangerous. Its coat is normally yellow and tan, but the color can vary from reddish brown to black. The spots on the coat are more solid and black on the head and neck and become larger rosette-shaped patterns along the side and back of the body.
Imagine a world where everywhere is crowded, and there is a constant struggle for food and clean water. Every day, survivability is the only goal, where people just try to make it to the next day. This may sound like something you would see on a movie screen, but it could be a reality. We, as humans are in a very dire situation. Sometime near the year 1800, the population of the Earth had reached one billion residents (Roster & Ortiz-Ospina, 2013). In the last two hundred years, however, the population of Earth has exploded to almost eight billion residents. The rate of increase is like nothing we have ever seen before in the history of the planet. One billion new earthlings were added in the last fourteen years (Roster, 2017). Many factors are at play which have directly impacted this unprecedented exponential population growth. With limited access to resources and land suitable for habitation, we as humans are reaching a defining moment (Dimick, 2014). Protecting necessary resources such as clean air, fresh water, and a sufficient food supply, while simultaneously supporting steady population growth will be a huge challenge in our future. The population growth rate of humans on this planet has been skyrocketing over the last two hundred years with no sign of slowing down. This will become a huge factor in the survivability of our species, however, taking responsibility for the negative human impact on the planet and changing our behaviors may be the only way to save
