Not many are aware that the overall plot is based off the ancient Greece play “Lysistrata” written by Aristophanes. Which first staged in 411 B.C. It was truly the first make-love-not-war play. To summarize it is a play where Lysistrata a fed up women, persuades fellow women of Greece to withhold sexual privileges from their husbands and lovers as a means of forcing the men to negotiate peace and to the end the Peloponnesian War. Essentially Chi-raq is a modern day twist of Lysisthra. The plot seems crazy, but maybe it’s just crazy enough to work. Peace and Harmony is the central theme in the play. Lysistrata is out to end the prolonged war. After consideration on how to accomplish her wishes, and idea finally arises. Lysistrata holds a meeting with all the women to become rebellious and refuse to have sexual relations with the men. During this meeting between all the women, Lysistrata states, “From now on, no more penises for you” (Line 124). Phaedo is a recount of Socrates’ final hour before his death, written by Plato in the form of a dialogue between Phaedo (Socrates’ prison guard) and Echecrates (1). In Socrates’ final hours we find him surrounded by like minds, pondering what happens to the soul after death, and if death is truly the end or just a new beginning. Those present at the prison include Socrates, Apollodorus, Simmias, Cebes, and Phaedo (2).
In Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus endures an arduous voyage filled with countless dangers. Although he is praised by comrades and countrymen as a wise, heroic king, Odysseus does not actually live up to his name as he begins this trip back to Ithaka. Through his journey though, Odysseus corrects his reckless, undisciplined, and arrogant actions, learning responsibility, restraint, and humility in the process.
The women in Lysistrata are portrayed as strong and confident. This is seen in the form of the main character of the play, Lysistrata; who is the first one to propose the idea of withholding sex as a measure to stop the war. She demonstrates the qualities of a true leader as she has a well-planned strategy to get her way: “if we would compel our husbands to make peace, we must refrain”. At first this idea is instantly rejected by the women, but Lysistrata manages to convince them with her words of wisdom. This indicates how strong and perseverant Lysistrata is, and this is displayed by her idea of giving up sex. This is likely to be appreciated by the contemporary Greek audiences, as sex is described as the “most beautiful thing in the world” and Lysistrata is giving it up.

As is the case with Greek tragedies—or roughly most tragedies that make their way to stage—fate plays a key role in the events in Oedipus Rex. Oedipus discovers there is a plague on his city. The only way to lift the plague is by slaying the former king’s killer. As the play’s acts unfold one discovers about the prophecy concerning Oedipus. The prophecy states that Oedipus is destined to kill his father and marry his mother. But was this just by chance or his predetermined fate.

If Lysistrata’s plan came to life today there would be an outrage going on, particularly in the United States. Social media will blow up about how women are denying men sex to end war. Many news outlets will pick it up and show people protesting about how Lysistrata’s plan is never going to work. Controversial topics usually cause war because in today’s society we make things appear way worse than they really are. With the power of social media, we have the power to spread any message to the entire world. Denying men sex isn’t going to end war and it is not going to make peace by any means. It will just make
Opinions may vary on attitude towards women from the ancient Greek attitude to now. However, the general agreement would be that women are treated with much more respect, and dignity. Semonides of Amorgos' Poem 7 on Women, has strong negative views towards most women. It says, “She knows no useful skill, except to eat” (Women, by Semonides of Amorgos (Poem 7) line 25). The whole poem was riddled with derogatory statements, that would not be okay to say, or at least publicly. Saying that women have no useful skill besides eating is flat out wrong. The poem also goes into fat shaming and body shaming. This was fine for the attitude towards women in ancient Greek times, but it isn’t now. Men and even other women, all over are getting in trouble, some even jailed for fat/ body shaming women. “She has no neck, no butt--she's all legs. You should see the way she moves around. I pity the poor man who holds this horrid woman in his arms” (Women, by Semonides of
The Aeneid, written by Virgil, was written in Rome between 30 and 19 B.C. Virgil wrote many of his writings during the time of Octavian, the estranged nephew to Caeser. During the beginning of the times of Octavian and the time of these writings Rome was in a state of civil war, which later turned into the most peaceful place in the world. Many people were torn from their homes and new boundaries were created. It is important to know the culture and gender roles of the people, the person in power, and the system of government in place at the time of the writing.
“Lysistrata” is a tale which is centered around an Athenian woman named Lysistrata and her comrades who have taken control of the Acropolis in Athens. Lysistrata explains to the old men how the women have seized the Acropolis to keep men from using the money to make war and to keep dishonest officials from stealing the money. The opening scene of “Lysistrata” enacts the stereotypical and traditional characterization of women in Greece and also distances Lysistrata from this overused expression, housewife character. The audience is met with a woman, Lysistrata, who is furious with the other women from her country because they have not come to discuss war with her. Sophocles’ play, Oedipus the King, has risen many questions concerning the main character and whether or not he acts on free will or if his future is predestined by the gods. I am going to test the theory that although Oedipus believes he is acting on his own free will, he is in fact a victim of the gods. I will analyze several different sources that discuss fate and human agency in Oedipus the King and then proceed to build my original argument on the archaic debate.
Despite the lower status of women, the plot of Lysistrata is mainly about all of the women coming together and being powerful enough to stop the men’s war. The women in Lysistrata know that the men love intimacy with them and they use that power by withholding pleasure from their men so as to stop the war, even though the women love sex as well:

However, “many years have passed by since Oedipus solved the riddle of the sphinx and now a plague has struck the city.” it’s Oedipus fate that encourage him to make bad decisions. In the play Lysistrata, was introduced around 411 BC, during a war comedy by the ancient Greeks in a city called Athens. The annual theatre festivals started in Athens, which gave birth to democracy. Over a period of time, Athens was known as a city-state that was divided among four different tribes. Both plays were a part of the festivals, which were produced by the people and citizens. It was a gift for the entire city and they enjoyed it.
In the ‘Frogs’ and ‘Wasps’ written by the “eminently best” comedian of the fifth century, Aristophanes, we see he utilized humour to exact the important message that Athens is corrupt, and on the verge of chaos. The Athenian audience would expect to be thrust into a world of humour in the City Dionysia, somewhere parallel to their own (e.g. the Athenian jury in the ‘Wasps’, and the failings of the government in ‘Frogs’). It is vital, then, that Aristophanes conveys his political and social views through slapstick, farce, and caricature to interest the audience. This is an important component in both plays as the audience is able to simultaneously accept his diplomatic views whilst being entertained. After all his main point for producing his plays were to produce something with a “little fable, with a moral”.
