Management Information System
The Role of MIS in the Decision-Making Process
Problem solving and decision-making are two important skills for any business process. Problem solving often involves decision-making, which is mainly important for management and leadership. According to BusinessDictionary.com, decision-making is “The thought process of selecting a logical choice from the available options.” Thus, logical decision-making is an important part of all science-based professions, where specialists apply their knowledge in a given area to make suitable decisions. For example, medical decision-making often involves making a diagnosis and selecting an

“Information systems are becoming of ever greater interest in progressive and dynamic organizations.” (Adeoti-Adekeye). The need to obtain access easily, quickly and more economically makes it vital to create procedures for the design, management and application of databases in organizations. Management information and information systems, in particular those related to effective decision-making processes in an organization, are observed as valuable organizational resources. In fact, the increased value of information as a basic concept in recent times, coupled with the continued rise of computer-based information systems and the integration of separated information systems led Getz in 1982 to suggest coalescence as an expected chance. To explain the coalescence, Getz has seen the manager of an organization that results from this coalescence as a generalist, with a solid understanding of technology but with a better understanding of business conditions and needs. However, he is not without his unfairness for MIS managers, but he feels that they are the right professionals to play the role of information managers in the organization. As he concludes that either the MIS manager will take the initiative to lead this fusion of the firm’s data resources activities and make some sense of their management, or a
I was asked to provide a distribution pattern that minimizes shipping costs and provides adequate availability and demand. I used transportation modeling to solve this problem. Transportation modeling is “an interactive procedure that finds the least costly means of moving products from a series of sources to a series of destinations” (Heizer & Render, 2011). This tool is used to determine the best distribution pattern for multiple locations. It is best for this problem because it allows for us to determine how many products can be held at each location to give Shuzworld the lowest shipping costs. The original setup had an optimal shipping cost of $13,600. It had 1300
These calculations can now be used to determine the breakeven volume for Shuzworld’s options. The data above states that the breakeven volume for reconditioning versus buying new equipment is 300 units. The breakeven volume for reconditioning versus outsourcing is 25 units, and the breakeven volume for buying new equipment versus outsourcing is 80 units.
“… he [Heinrich Schliemann] found layers of ruins … and two bore unmistakable signs of violent destruction. One of these layers, the seventh according to more recent excavators, was no doubt the city of Priam and Hector. The historicity of the Homeric tale had been demonstrated archaeologically.” - M.I. Finley, the World of Odysseus
The rational decision-making model describes a series of steps that decision makers should consider if their goal is to maximize the quality of their outcome. In other words, if you want to make sure that you make the best choice, going through the formal steps of the rational decision-making model may make sense. The following are the steps taken to come to a rational decision: 1. Identify the problem, 2. Establish decision criteria, 3. Weigh decision criteria, 4. Generate alternatives, 5. Evaluate the alternative, 6. Choose the best alternative, 7. Implement the decision, 8. Evaluate the decision.
“I am the Joker,” muttered James Eagan Holmes. The last words the victims heard the night Holmes committed mass murder in the Century 16 movie theatre still haunt the living victims and countless other citizens of Aurora, Colorado. It is compelling how someone attempted to rationalize his actions with such an elementary phrase, which once had no meaning at all. The claim seems nonsensical and slightly amusing solely because he is implying he committed the crime on the basis that he is the arch nemesis of famous comic hero, Batman. Statements like these alone do not make an intriguing court trial. The men and women sitting on the jury for weeks on end need entertainment just to stay conscience enough to finish the trial.
Health care is one of the largest growing industries in the country. Technology and medical advancements attribute to the constant changes in the health care industry. The economy also continues to change, and with the changing economy health care cost continue to rise. Companies across the nation have either closed or moved to other countries. El Paso County Clinic is struggling to keep the doors open. Buduget cuts have affected the clinic tremendously. The El Paso County Clinic’s budget has been cut by 15%. The population affected by the budget cuts are Medicaid recepients.
Organizational behavior helps managers to improve the organization in a good way. Decision making process is the one of the behavior in human organizational behavior. According to McShane and Von Glinow (2000), “decision making a conscious process of making choices among one or more alternatives with the intention of moving toward some desired state of affairs”. Decision making is a linear process and it includes six steps such as identifying the problems, gather and evaluate data, list and evaluate alternatives, select best action, implement the decision and getter feedback (refer to Figure 1 in Appendix 1).
We have to think about the qualitative factors that are involved in our decision making too. In the decision making process, as we saw in a case called The Nancy M. Hohman, we saw that many times the numbers will not speak louder than our personal preferences. The Nancy M. Hohman was a less than one year old ship, worthy US$ 40 million, carrying 200,000 tons of crude oil and 28 crew members and had an engine malfunction 9 miles way off the coast of South Africa. However, Port Elizabeth (the nearest one) was too small for the ship and the next close one was 380 miles away.
Decision making skills is one of the most important aspects of management. It involves personal and interpersonal skills, fact finding, logical thinking, creativity, analytical ability, sensitivity to others and assertiveness
The decision-making process occurs at all levels of management. However, the top executive managers, middle level managers, and front line managers are responsible for guiding the decision making process within their healthcare organizations (Liebler & McConnell, 2008,p.148). CEO’s are responsible for guiding the actions and behaviors of their employees to collectively achieve the organization’s goals. The mission and vision statement are the foundation of what direction the healthcare agency is heading. The CEO and top level executives are responsible for developing code of ethics and code of conduct to align with accreditation, licensing, and federal and state laws.
It is generally accepted that information is a vital commodity for the successful operation of today’s organizations. Nowadays modern business organizations are using computerized information systems in order to obtain such information. However as the technology advances rapidly the main issue is how can an organization should effectively use such an information system - which its management sometimes can be unpredictable - in order to effectively help the whole organization structure to improve and take the most out of it.
Decision making can be described as a process of making a decision or decisions, based on choices made amongst two or more competing course of actions. The ‘Decision making’ also requires making a define choice between two or more alternatives course of actions that are available.
South Korea’s economic transformation from poverty to one of Asia’s biggest economies remains one of the enduring stories of the 20th century, dubbed the ‘Miracle on the Hanggang River.’ An isolated nation of farmers now leads the world in Internet access, is a global innovator in consumer electronics, and is now home to some of the biggest automotive, electronic, and shipbuilding companies. Per capita GNP, only $100 in 1963, exceeded $16,000 in 2005.”
The purpose of this report is to explain what “Management Information Systems” (MIS) is. This report will discuss how management information system helps different departments in an organization. The functions and advantages of using MIS will also be examined in this report.
On a warm evening after a busy day at the office, I fired up my Laptop to search “Big Bang Theory”, to learn further about the famous theory. However, all my search results were related to the sitcom. This was astonishing, nevertheless, I checked the next page, the page after that, and so on. Surprisingly, not even a single result pertaining to the intended scientific theory existed in the search result. Only after appending the term ‘science’ I arrived at the expected result. This made me ponder about underlying intelligent systems at play, including the possible reasons for search engine’s failure to present the expected results. This incident was phenomenal in transforming my way of thinking about recommendation systems and Human-Computer Interaction.
