Pursuing an MPA at Appalachian State University
What do working in a jail, knee surgery, and obtaining a local government job in Davidson County have in common? For me, each has played a role in the journey of my career. My journey has led me to a juncture, where in order to reach my potential, I plan to pursue an advanced degree. After outlining my career to date, I will explain my rationale behind the pursuit of an MPA degree, and discuss why Appalachian State’s program, specifically, appeals to me.
In December of 2004, I graduated from Appalachian State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sociology. In retrospect, I was just happy to graduate. I was a first generation college graduate, who had the foresight to complete my

Let me address the last two questions first. There are many reasons I could give for wanting to pursue an MPA. Currently, I have about 8.5 years of service in local government, and see myself working in the public sector for the better part of my profession. The MPA will equip me with the skills and knowledge to advance as I grow in my career. Specifically, through an MPA program, I want to learn more about budgeting, grant writing, and personnel management. Furthermore, I view the MPA as a vehicle to drive my career to higher levels. Whether I decide to pursue a higher leadership role within Davidson County, traverse into economic development, or pursue other career options, the MPA will position me to succeed in my career endeavors. There are other options too, such as city, town, and county management. The wide swath the MPA covers appeals greatly to me. I have also thought about how the MPA could be used to work in the private sector as an Industry and Government Affairs officer. At this stage in my career, I do not have one single path from which I would like to choose, I want my options to remain open, and I would like the opportunity for upward mobility. An MPA, coupled with my work experience, will open career doors and give me the options I
I grew up alongside the wild Rocky Mountain Columbines, where the air is crisp and the winters are long. I spent my time engaging in the arts such as acting, writing, and creating. From a young age I was drawn to the world of imagination and found happiness through producing art. We all face and over come challenges within our lives and whenever I am faced with hardship I find comfort in visually expressing myself.
To accomplish anything in life, you must set goals. These goals must be realistic and achievable. Two years ago, I was at a point in my life that I never believed I would see. I was finally at my associate’s degree graduation day. Becoming at teen mom at 17, college had never even crossed my mind. This was a moment in my life where I was able to not be your average teen mom statistic. Continuing to better my life and my daughter’s I set a new goal after graduation to achieve my bachelor’s degree. After speaking with UMUC counselors, I decided to obtain my bachelor’s degree in Social Science with a minor in Emergency Management. Currently, I am in my final two classes at UMUC with a scheduled graduation date of May 15.
Experience in, or the ability to acquire specific knowledge of, the health and human services and government relations and policy development
The qualities that attract me to LSA are the vast amount of career opportunities stemming from the subjects available to major in. It is the largest of University of Michigan's schools and offers an extreme amount of variety. I am highly interested in technology and computers and the courses that LSA provides. I have two sisters who are involved in University of Michigan's LSA program and, based on what I have witnessed and what they have said, it is a hard, but fulfilling school. Due to the high intensity of this undergraduate college, career options will open up. Companies who are looking for undergraduate students or students after graduation know that kids from LSA are well prepared and educated to perform the job requirements that they
In reference to The Scholarly Practitioner: Connections of Research and Practice in the Classroom, by Marcia L. Godwin and Jack W. Meek (2016), I’m not really sure where I fit in the categories of DPA students. It seems I would be considered “early career” or “mid-career,” but to be more precise I have effectively retired from a first career and recently started a second. My current position with the US Army Corp of Engineers allows a better blend of my interests in public administration and the recreational aspects of natural resource management. My reasons for pursuing a DPA are twofold, on one hand I have developed a strong desire towards education for the sake of education on the other hand I do not feel that I am employed at a level that reflects my abilities and I feel a more advanced degree may aid in my pursuit of a public sector natural resource manager or community planner. In my current position I find many opportunities to provide input on budgeting, policy implementation, interagency collaboration, labor management, community involvement, resource and asset management, and on a small scale I am involved in community planning. In my opinion, my strengths lie in these areas and I look forward to greater

Since medical school, I have been fascinated by musculoskeletal system, body's movements and how our muscles function according to our cerebral control.
Graduating in June from California State University, Los Angeles, I will hold a Bachelor of Science in Rehabilitation Services. My education is primarily focused in providing services to individuals with emotional, intellectual, and physical disabilities, and those with social disadvantages.
The chance to complete a master’s degree in public administration at Arkansas State University would be more than just an opportunity. Being a first generation American, I am proud of my accomplishments both personal and academic.
Pursuing a college degree, has always been at the top of my goal’s list. Of course, over the years my career path has changed countless times, as did my interest. Like almost any elementary aged child, I wanted to become a veterinarian, a doctor, or possibly even an astronaut. Perhaps, I even aspired to become one of America’s future presidents. Where these are all commendable professions, I came to realize that none of these vocations were truly the path I wanted to follow. I knew I wanted to receive a degree that not only could be a successful career path for myself, but would also allow for me to raise and have a family. I began studying various university’s degree programs, highlighting the ones of interest and ignoring the others. Finally,
My interests in Marine Laboratory stemmed when I was a senior in high school when I experimented the effects of excess fertilizer byproducts on water hyacinth’s ability to absorb metals in fresh bodies of water. Growing up as a swimmer, marine chemistry has always intrigued me, and working at MPL will help me decide the career pathway I want to choose. MPL offers a myriad of internship projects that interest me, but with my given statistics and chemistry background, it would be an honor to work with Eric Terrill, Grant Deane, and Peter Gerstoft.
I always believe and follow in the quote, “Don’t run behind success, run behind excellence, and success will run behind you”- Kamari aka Lyrikal. That’s how I am preparing myself for the Complicated Tax world to help the client with excellence service. Without the CPA license I am unable to serve all kind of clients, but my career goal is to serve all kinds of clients, and the CPA license can benefit me reaching my career goal. There are a lot of valuable characteristics an effective CPA should have.

Once I graduate from BGM high school I will be attending Upper Iowa University for four years to obtain my Bachelor’s degree in Child Protection Services as well as Child Psychology. These industries deal greatly with people and how they grow overtime, which is why I’m so fascinated with them. Working in these fields will allow me to cause an immensely positive impact on the families as well as the business I work for.
August of 2013, I made one of the best decisions of my life. Starting college, being broke and alone, I was nervous to see where this path was going to take me. It only took one block for me to realize that I had made the greatest decision I possibly could have at the young age of nineteen. This process has taught me many lessons. I have grown into an educator with a rare look on the world. As I reflect on my experience, I look to the outcomes for the bachelor's degree and I cannot be more excited about my experience.
