A tragic hero is a figure with a heroic personality and a noble background who has many flaws that lead to his own death. In the play, The Tragedy of Macbeth, Macbeth is a tragic hero. Macbeth is the Thane of Glamis, a nobleman, who is known for his bravery during the war against Scotland. His fatal flaws include arrogance and ambition which cause him to behave violently in order to stay in power. These violent acts eventually cause his death.
In the beginning of the play, Macbeth runs into the three witches after Duncan orders that Macbeth is to be given Cawdor’s title. As Macbeth talks to the witches they call him Thane of Glamis and Cawdor and tell him that he will be king. “All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, thane of Glamis! All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, thane of Cawdor! All hail, Macbeth that shalt be king hereafter!” (Shakespeare 1.3 49-51). After hearing the witches say he will be king, he wants to know more but the witches turn away. Macbeth is already a nobleman, being Thane of Cawdor, but he is ambitious and wants more power than that of a thane. He knows if he wants to be king, he must do anything to become the king, whether it is violent or not. “Receiving the title of Thane of Cawdor, Macbeth reveals that he is already thinking of murder.”(Focus on Macbeth). As the play goes on, Lady Macbeth and he want to fulfill the prophecy of the witches and want Macbeth to become king. -- Before Macbeth kills the existing king, he sees a bloody dagger in the air and
