Macbeth

Macbeth is a play written by William Shakespeare. The play is a tragedy about a general in Scotland's army who kills to become king and how he deals with the following suspicion and uprisals. Over the course of the play Macbeth, Lady Macbeth changes more than Macbeth, because she becomes weaker while Macbeth remains relatively the same.

Macbeth and Banquo’s reaction to the prophecy told to them by the witch’s gave way for two opposing opinions on both the validity and manifesting of the prophecy. Although their opinions throughout the unveiling of the prophecy were opposing throughout, at all times they both rendered the prophecy in contrastive ways, whether they contemplated on its benefit or hindrance towards their gleaming future.

How does Shakespeare present the characters of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth in Act 1? Macbeth is a dramatic play which tells the story of the downfall of a ‘Nobleman’ who becomes a ‘tyrant’. In Act one Shakespeare introduces the characters Macbeth and Lady Macbeth using a range of dramatic devices.

Macbeth is the “bravest” soldier, very noble, courageous. He is also the honorable Thane of Glamis, but he is not a virtuous one. Macduff is very loyal Scottish nobleman, courageous and is also a Thane of a city. Banquo is a brave, courageous noble general who like Macbeth thinks ambitious thoughts. MacDuff and Banquo are very loyal to their King. When King Duncan was killed they do everything that they possibly can to find out who murdered the King and to properly hand the killer the consequences.

From treating the witches with respect and dignity, Macbeth now storms into their camp, sword drawn, blustered, and demands information, and speaks to them with contempt and a sense of aggravation, “How now, you secret, black, and midnight hags? What is it you do?” He demands answers instantly, “Answer me to what I ask you!” His composure and mannerism has significantly changed and deteriorated, “Call ‘em! Let me see’em!” He now willingly looks into the dark arts and gives himself up to evil by staring into the conjured apparitions of the future, denouncing his kingship to Banquo’s children and grand children. But Macbeth’s evil and lust for dominance and the title of King sway him into killing Banquo, and his family, “Seize upon Fife, give to the edge of the sword his wife, his babes, and all unfortunate souls that trace him in his line!” Macbeth’s language is almost beast like, closely assimilating that of his wife’s, which has already been corrupted by evil. Contrasted with the reputable and trustworthy Macbeth of earlier times, this new Macbeth speaks of mass murder, treason and slaughtering children. The evil that has corrupted him has mutated him into a vile twisted man.

Macbeth receives prophecies from multiple people, his wife tries to make him something that he is not, by getting him to kill anyone that she wants him to. How Banquo is a foil to Macbeth A foil’s purpose in literature is to provide contrast and advance the protagonist’s character in way that spurs the protagonist into action. In Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Shakespeare shows how Banquo is a direct foil to Macbeth and how Banquo’s presence in the play also develops Macbeth’s character. Throughout the play Macbeth and Banquo characters are contrasted on many different occasions, for example the witches’ prophecies and how they both react to them, their specific character traits, and lastly their relationship and how to degrades throughout the play. Shakespeare presents these two characters as complete opposites, which gives the audience a chance to connect with Macbeth as his character advances through the plot and in character.

Audience becomes aware of Macbeth’s corruption when he plans to kill his ‘friend’, Banquo. He describes him as “dispatched” (3.4.15), and later as “safe” (3.4.25). This positions the audience to feel as though Macbeth is somewhat desperate to convince himself that he has acted appropriately despite using corrupt power. Using this stylistic device of language further demonstrates that Macbeth has now been corrupted to the extent that he longer feels compassion for his former companions. This ultimately establishes the representation that Macbeth’s illegitimate power has directly resulted in his destructive nature.
