What is most important to everyone in today's society? What drives people to become powerful, wealthy, or to get what they desire through harmful or illegal ways? The word you are looking for isgreed. It drives people to do excessive things in order to get what they want in life. However you may believe this has just started, but this has been around for centuries. The theme of greed was revealed to us in Macbeth, continues to relate to modern society even today. Anybody can be greedy, because all of us want to gain materialistic items to better ourselves. Government Officials are corrupt and greedy today because they already have power and they could also receive bribes for money. And even the banks that you use to store your money or take loans out of could be using you. …show more content…
Why you may ask? Because in modern society in order to get what you want. You need to have money or power. "I grant him bloody, Luxurious, avaricious, false, deceitful, Sudden, malicious, smacking of every sin That has a name." (Shakespeare 4.3.70-74). They are talking about “Black” Macbeth in this quote. Nevertheless, I think that this quote means that Macbeth has the king's Blood on his hands. And the reasons why he killed King Duncan where all stated in the quote… “Luxurious, avaricious, false, deceitful, Sudden, malicious.” The word Luxurious, it is something that everyone wants. Luxuries that they can show off and make themselves feel better. All of these words have something to do with greed and can even relate to
David Rosenberg once stated that “hope is a tree sitting on a mountain where the grass don’t grow ” . This quote relates to Macbeth because he hopes things that never lasts forever even if he tries no matter way . Lady Macbeth influenced Macbeth to carry out evil activities.
Lady Macbeth is a two-faced megalomaniac who is responsible for the murder of King Duncan in the play Macbeth by William Shakespeare. After Macbeth tells her about their probable future of royalty foretold by a group of old witches, she immediately creates a plan to kill the king of Scotland in order to gain control of the throne. She, however, puts this murderous crime upon the shoulders of her husband Macbeth to do the dirty work. In the play, one can see how Lady Macbeth is more responsible for the murder of King Duncan because of her abilities to easily manipulate people into doing what she wants.
Macbeth murdered Duncan because he wanted to be king and gain more power. Another piece of evidence that supports my statement is when Macbeth is talking about Duncan being murdered and hiding that fact that he murdered him, he says “And his gashed stabs look'd like a breach in nature/ For ruin’s wasteful entrance; there the murderers”. In this quote Macbeth says “there the murderers”.(add why he chose those words, add more detail, try to use different parts of the quote,”gashed stabs look'd like a breach in nature” His thirst for power is making him lie and hide that fact the he killed King Duncan. This quote ties in with the corrupting influence of power because it shows how power kind of hides the bad things that you’ve
Fear, this moves us to do many things no matter if they are against or for our morals. In the play The Tragedy of Macbeth it was fear that was the main deciding factor that themed throughout this play. This can be proved by the other murders that happened after King Duncan's. These murders were committed, because Macbeth was scared of being caught and having to serve justice for the crimes he had committed. And as for Lady Macbeth, she washes her hands all the time trying to get the blood that is no longer on her hands off and sleepwalking, all of what she does is out of her own fear.
They say greed is the root of all evil. This is especially shown in Macbeth, the desire of power becomes an apparent symbol throughout the play. How does a man loyal to the king turn so easily from the slight temptation of the crown. After the murder of Duncan Macbeth is seen picturing an imaginary dagger, “Is this a dagger which I see before me,/ The handle toward my hand? Come, let me clutch thee.” (2.1.33-34 Macbeth) Macbeth isn’t even seen remorseful for the cruel deed he just commits; to a man who he swore an oath of loyalty to. Macbeth shows signs of greed and gluttony as the infatuation of power settles in him throughout the plot.
“Stars, hide your fires; Let not light see my black and deep desires”(I, 4, 52-53) This is exactly what the stars did in Macbeth by William Shakespeare. Macbeth wanted Happiness in his life but to get that he used moral sacrifices that led to his demise and no purpose of living. This is demonstrated in the dagger speech and the Tomorrow speech that will be discussed showing his ambition for power and happiness to his demise.
In Shakespeare's “Macbeth” both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are crazy but the crazier one is Macbeth. Macbeth murdered innocent people, he was obsessed to become king and he believed whatever the witches said.
Initially, Macbeth’s ambition for power is subdued by his longing to hold onto his honor and dignity. Unfortunately, Macbeth lets go of his integrity and kills the unguarded Duncan and so in an attempt to keep the guilt of his deeds to himself, distances himself from not only his wife but also has one of his closest friends murdered. Finally, Macbeth’s thirst for power and greatness emptied him of everything he had; dignity, respect, and honor. Ultimately, motivation that is founded on selfish reasons leads one down a path that strippes one of everthing they have and so takes away any meaning to
No sane person goes on a killing spree, and it is greed for power that drives Macbeth to the murders of many. In the story, Macbeth begins as the Thane of Glamis. He is already a large contributor in battle and this leads him to success early on in the plot. However, he doesn’t realize that he wants more power until he is told prophecies by three witches, and his wife- Lady Macbeth manipulates him. In the prophecies, he is told that he will become Thane of Cawdor, and then King. Macbeth is named Thane of Cawdor by King Duncan after the battle in the beginning of the story, so part of the prophecy comes true right away. It is not until Macbeth tells Lady Macbeth about the prophecies through a letter, that Lady Macbeth convinces Macbeth to kill King Duncan to obtain the throne. King Duncan is Macbeth’s first murder to begin his reign for power. He is now throned King, but his greed for power doesn’t stop there. Macbeth kills anyone who he feels threatens his title as King. He has loyal companion Banquo killed because he feels Banquo might know that he killed King Duncan-if Banquo told others, this would lead to the de-throning of Macbeth as king- taking away his power. Insanity in Macbeth truly shines through when he kills Banquo, because of their close relationship. Banquo was nothing but loyal to Macbeth throughout the story. As the plot thickens, the witches continue to tell prophecies to Macbeth. One of them being that he should fear Macduff. Macbeth then kills Macduff’s family as he fears Macduff will somehow dethrone him. As people who were once loyal to Macbeth betray him, Macbeth continues to strive for power as king, until he is defeated by Macduff. Ultimately, Macbeth begins the story as a noble, respected Thane, but his ambition and greed for power as King/staying King leads him to insanity full of murder and deception, until his death.
Of course, we know that Macbeth (with some encouragement from his wife) does murder Duncan.
Fleance does not return back to Macbeth’s castle shows that he has control over his own fate by opposing to the future that the witches had seen in their prophecy. “Thou shalt get kings, though thou be none” (act1 scene3 line 70) In the beginning of the play the witches had foretell Banquo that his sons will become the king. Macbeth strongly believes in the witches prophecy. He commits murder against Banquo and Fleance in order to fight against the destiny that the witches had prophesied. “Thou may ’st revenge —O slave!”(act scene line) Banquo urges Fleance to escape and someday to take revenge of this gory tragedy. The reader expects Fleance to return to Macbeth’s castle to take revenge by murdering Macbeth similarly like he had done to his father. Though, the reader loses where he had fled in the story after he had escaped from that scene. This may show that he would not become the king. As the witches recite in the beginning of the play. “Fair is foul, foul is fair”(act scene line), Macbeth acts as what the witches had said. He is brainwashed by the evil spirits, he has no more control over himself. He believes that he is doing the right thing but he is actually trapping himself in a difficult situation. Although, both Banquo and Fleance opposes to this
As popular music producer, rapper, and artist, Fetty Wap once said “My whole thing is loyalty. Loyalty over royalty; word is bond.” as humans we see symbols in nearly every form of literature, from urban pop culture to shakespeare. In the play Macbeth by William Shakespeare a loyal lord the king ends up receiving a new title and in turn receives more power and becomes next in line to the throne. As he realizes his new found greed for power Macbeth ends up assassinating the current king, King Duncan, he also is influenced by more greed and kills his best friend, Banquo, in an attempt to stop his son from overthrowing him. Eventually the people of scotland become aware of his tyranny and get Duncan's kin to overthrow Macbeth and end his reign
Macbeth is already the thane of Glamis and a high Scottish general, but his wife lady Macbeth contributes to him being a tragic hero as she often encourages him to do bad stuff for a good outcome. The good outcome has to do with getting more wealth and power thus, an act of greed because Lady Macbeth urges Macbeth to feel he deserves more. When Macbeth considers the murder he states, “if it were done when ’tis done, then ’there well It were done quickly . . . He’s here in double trust: First, as I am his kinsman and his subject, Strong both against the deed; then, as his host, who should against his murderer shut the door, Not bear the knife myself (act 1 s7) Later on when his greed tones down as he realizes nothing motivates him to kill the king other than his own ambition lady Macbeth states “When you durst do it,” she says, “then you were a man” (1.7.49) this urges Macbeth to want immediate power and
In William Shakespeare's tragic play, "Macbeth", there is blood, power and greed; all of which can be read with literal and metaphorical interpretations. They intertwine at different points in the story and have different effects on each of the characters including: Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, Malcom, and Macduff. These three ideas create a cycle throughout the story, particularly for Macbeth, as greed leading to the spilling of blood, which can give someone power is ultimately his demise.
William Shakespeare's Macbeth is a tragedy that takes historical events and turns them into fiction. Shakespeare wrote the play for King James I to honor his predecessors. Throughout the story the reader learns many lessons which involve ambition, guilt, things not being what they seeming what they seem, and nature versus the unnatural.
