Connecting Shakespeare to Modern Times
The plays of Shakespeare master the understanding of the human condition. The meanings behind each play are universal truths or messages that are considered timeless. In the play Macbeth, Shakespeare portrays his characters to demonstrate some of the best and some of the worst human traits, which reflect experiences of modern humanity throughout the world. Through examining today’s humanity, Lady Macbeth’s character relates to the role of Regina George from the film Mean Girls, the role of Macbeth relates to the historical event of World War 2, specifically Adolf Hitler, and the apparitions relate to believing in Santa Claus.

In the play Macbeth, the character Macbeth shares similarities to the historical figure Adolf Hitler. Macbeth’s character strongly believes in what he stands for, which leads him to hire people to kill others for him. When Macbeth says “And bid my will avouch it, yet I must not, for certain friends are both his and mine” (III.i.119-120) he is ordering the murderers to kill Banquo for him because Macbeth does not want to get caught and lose his friends over Banquo’s death. Also when Macbeth is getting ready for battle, he orders “send out more horses; skirt the country round. Hang those that talk of fear” (V.iii.36-37) which portrays how serious he is about letting his beliefs take control over his natural mind set, similar to Hitler. In World War 2, Adolf Hitler was the person to put down and kill certain people based on their beliefs and race. The Nazis thought they were a special race and believed all other races were not as good as them, especially those who had Jewish beliefs. Hitler was the leader of The Nazis, and ordered the killing of many innocent people, just like Macbeth killed Macduff’s family. As stated Macbeth relates to Hitler because they are both ambitious, this leads them to order the killing of many people.
