The opening of the movie starts out with a biblical reference. Before the movie even begins, there is a verse from the book of Proverbs which states: The wicked flee when none pursueth. –28:1. I believe this Bible verse sets the foundation and tone for what will be revealed to the audience throughout the movie. This is not the only quoting of the Bible, there is another mention of Ezekiel and the dry bones. Madi Ross, one of the main characters, goes on to say, “There is nothing free, accept the grace of God.” Therefore, I believe this quote sums up her overall viewpoint on life, which is, go and get what’s yours. This transcends into her pursuit to catch Tom Chaney (the man who killed her father), because she will not back down or take no for an answer. I believe Madi Ross …show more content…
In this situation, I found his character annoying because he came across as arrogant. I often noticed Cogburn’s commentary had hints of sarcasm. His hints of sarcasm might have to due with his high consumption of alcohol, but who knows. At times his sarcasm was more apparent than at other times. I did not agree with his impulsive behavior. I was disappointed when he decided to shoot the two men in the log cabin, who had key information regarding Tom Chaney. I wonder if his attitude is partial to his drinking? This could be a case of the chicken vs. the egg. Tom Chaney, appeared to be a threatening in a one-on-one scenario, but in a large group he seemed slightly hesitant to assume a leadership position. The clothing and styling of all the characters fit the western time setting. I believe the costume designers captured the essence of the decade, even down to the hair and makeup. Madi Ross, had her hair styled in two long luscious pig tail braids. The braiding of Native American hair was and still is highly common today. Also, Native American male and females take pride in having long
In James Hurst’s short story “The Scarlet Ibis”, he explains how people should not be sheltered from the world, but instead be pushed past their boundaries to live life to the fullest. The story is about 2 boys who play and hangout in Old Woman Swamp. When the narrator and Doodle visit Old Woman Swamp for the first time, Doodle says “Its so pretty [...] so pretty, pretty, pretty.” (Hurst, pg 170). Doodle expanded his horizons when he visited the swamp and got to experience the world instead of being trapped inside the house.
They weren't as nice as the clothes before, but still had a large quantity of detail in them. Wealthy men, aristocrats and politicians used to mainly wear wigs before this time. They eventually stopped shaving their heads and let their hair grow out to where they were able to take off the wig and started to style their hair to resemble a wig with a poof in the front and a ponytail the back. Womens style varied on where you where. In the more rural or smaller towns , women dressed plainly and used homemade fabrics, to save money for their men out at war.
The costumes were also quite beautiful and wonderfully tailored to each character. The many different

Tom Chaney that’s who throughout this novel he proves he lacks grit is many different ways. In the begging on the book Tom Chaney killed an unarmed name Frank Ross, and stole his horse. Mattie claims, “My father was not armed at the time. Tom Chaney raised his rifle and shot his in the head…He out a saddle on papas horse Judy and rode bareback. Darkness swallowed him up” (Portis 16-17). This shows Tom Chaney is a heartless coward, that runs away from his problems. Towards the end of the book Tom Chaney starts to feel sorry for himself, and instead of taking responsibility he blames the world for his problems. Tom Chaney says, “Everything is against me” (Portis 199). Tom Chaney swears nothing is his fault. As you see Tom Chaney is clearly a Gritless
Doodle's Reason to Succeed Do you ever feel like an outsider? Well, that is how Brother portrays Doodle, a disabled boy in the story, "The Scarlet Ibis". Brother referred to him as this because he could not walk until he was about six or seven.
James Hurst’s “The Scarlet Ibis” is a fictional short story about a boy with a disabled brother named Doodle. He is ashamed of Doodle’s physical errors, so he teaches his brother to walk not for Doodle’s sake but so that he will have more pride in himself. He gives Doodle several challenges and pushes him too hard. When Doodle fails these challenges, the narrator leaves Doodle behind out of anger, and as a result, Doodle dies. The theme of this story revolves around the narrator’s pride and how it influences his actions.
“The Scarlet Ibis” is a short story by James Hurst telling the tragic tale of Doodle, a mentally and physically disabled child and his brother, who is the narrator. Doodle's life has never been easy. Brother's whole life has been based around making Doodle like other kids so that he can avoid the embarrassment of having a brother who is not able to walk. This would hurt his own ego. As the story goes on, Brother tries to fix his damaged heart caused by his shame and selfishness toward Doodle. This story has some very important themes in it. A theme is a story’s view about life and how people behave in it. The theme does not preach or teach intentionally. The reader can discover the theme of a story by investigating three different aspects: the characters, the plot, and the setting. In this story, however, there are three themes that are presented at different times. Throughout the story Brother shows pride, but not the good kind. He also shows guilt and blame for the mistakes that he has made that haunt him. And lastly, her presents acceptance of others as well as rejection of others.
To me the most obvious relation to the bible is in a scene where the main character David (Tobey Maguire) is the first to see a fire that breaks out in a tree in his front yard. Ironically enough, the tree is on fire, but is not consumed by the flames, it’s burning but

Mia Hamm and Michelle Akers are the best female soccer players of all time because they are top scorers, they have the most awards, they are both well-known players.
One of the biggest turning points in the movie is when all the characters are in the woods and a multitude of Jesus believers join together for a good old fashion baptism. This scene is particularly important because here is where Pete and Delmar miraculously change their ways, for they have been saved by the grace of God. This scene makes most movie watchers get the feeling of a religious based movie. After this point if you pay close attention to the symbolism you can

I think it's to do with pleasure, rather than pain. These two are so intimate at this moment that they just want to be as close as possible. They hold each other tight, hands and the position of his abdomen, which lacks movement, suggesting that he just stays as far in as possible. This also indicates that one partner is sexually dominant the other is submissive.
