As for Madrid the population has increased since the city became the capital of Spain in the sixtieth century. The population of Madrid has increased by three million people since the 1970’s. The population of Madrid drop from 1970 until about 1995. The drop in population was also seen in other European cities. This was caused by two different reason, the first was because of the growth of the suburbs versus the downtown area, and the second reason was because of the economic decline and growth rate of the European Union. The growth of Madrid happened between 1998 and 2005. This was caused by a large number of immigration into Madid. This was in respond to a Spanish economic growth. They are Romanian, Ecuadorian, Bolivian, Colombian, Peruvian, Chinese, Moroccan, Dominican, Brazilian, and Paraguayan. In 1993 there a total of 2,476 Japanese citizens registered with the Japanese embassy located in Madrid. There are other important ethic groups located with in Madrid, they are Filipinos, Equatorial Guineans, Bulgarians, Indians, Italians, Argentines, Senegalese and Poles. There are estimated 250,000 Muslim living in Madrid according to a study done by Unión de Comunidades Islámicas de España in 2012. This represents less than four percent of Madrid’s population, of this four percent most of them came from Morocco, and African cities. Just over 50% of them came from a Spanish background. The cities that see the largest number of immigrants in Madrid are Usera, Centro, Carabanchel, and Tetuán. The cities that see the smallest number of immigrants are Fuencarral-El Pardo, Retiro, and Chamartín. The Japanese immigrants living in Madrid are located in Majadahonda, Mirasierra, Vaguada, and other areas in northwest Madrid.
