Magnetic Therapy
Probably one of the largest contemporary trends in the therapeutic world is the use of magnetic therapy. However, it is also one of the least researched modalities, and has very little sound explanation for it's effectiveness. Winning over its clientele with testimonials by everyone from doctors to elite athletes, magnets are making a place for themselves in the health and therapeutic fields. This is accomplished by utilizing many different marketing strategies and very little research. "The trend is so lucrative, athletes are adding brand-name magnets to their list of endorsements" (Ruibal, p. 3C). This method of rehabilitation and treatment dates back thousands of years to when they were used by Greek,

Magnetic therapy could indeed be a useful rehabilitation technique but is still only a theory due to a lack of experimental evidence (Borsa, p. 150; Livingston p. 26; Vallbona et al. p. 1204). This is often overlooked however. The use of testimonials in the marketing and advertising for these magnets makes it difficult for the common consumer to view this type of therapy objectively. One aspect that is understood, however, are the effect magnetic fields have on our bodies during everyday life. We are constantly being exposed to magnetic fields. Microwaves, power lines, radio waves, refrigerators: these all give off magnetic charges (CSA, 1994; Barnothy p. 123). The earth is surrounded by a magnetic field, which is the reason for the North and South poles (Leonard, 861).
Our bodies too have magnetic fields. According to the Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine, magnetic fields from the external environment enter the body easily because it is approximately 70% water. After penetrating into the tissues, a change in the alignment of the body's electromagnetic fields and an interaction with acupuncture points and meridians on the body occurs (Robinson, 1846). Magnetic fields also aids the following functions: cell division and replacement, blood circulation and hemoglobin saturation, flushing of deposits that line the walls of blood vessels and
the effectiveness of rehabilitation. To find out more about how this applies to the real world, I decided to do my research report on this. My
A2. As I discussed above, there are different models of health and healing after which we have patterned our care and practice. Dr. Dossey (n.d.) wrote about three models or Eras, and how the understanding of health and healing, and the practice of medicine, has developed and changed over the last several hundred years. Although Era I was a very important time of medical growth when dealing with the physical part of our human body, I feel that Era III has brought a much more complete way of helping the patient reach a higher state of health and wellness.
Also during that time period a common treatment for such disorders included a procedure known as trephining. This procedure included chipping a hole into the skull of the afflicted person. This procedure has endured through time and is still used today in a more refined way to treat medical problems like migraines and skull fractures. When dealing with mental afflictions, Ancient Egyptians recommended modern methods like engaging in recreational activities like dancing, and painting. In the past it has also been common to lock up in jails or dungeons individuals who were mentally ill and who acted out. In the 17th century drugs like laudanum, unguents, opium grains were used as sedatives to ease the torment that mentally ill individuals would endure. At certain points in time, the mentally ill were housed in monasteries up until asylums were created and used to hold these individuals.
In addition to this, it can also apply to people going through either rehabilitation and other healing purposes.
occupational therapy is a form of therapy for those recuperating from physical or mental illness that encourages rehabilitation through the performance of activities required in daily life (insert citation). Matt patients are victims with injury to any part of the hand and forearm. Throughout the day, I observed Matt’s techniques for helping the hand regain full range of motion. He begins by placing his patient’s hand and arm in a fluid box filled with that contains sawdust for 15 minutes. The box will then begin to generate heat making the sawdust kick up in the box. When this happens, Matt, asks his patient to being moving his/her hand to help warm them up to lessen the stiffness After, the time is up Matt will begin doing a series of messages that target the ligaments, muscle, and bone that were affected by the injury. Then he will begin to make his patient go through series of strength tests to create a baseline to see how much they improve throughout the week of therapy.
“…harmonic energy field rearranges the foot’s naturally occurring atoms, converting the pain-nuclei into pleasing comfortrons.” These words were created by pseudoscientists to convince us you will feel better by using recognizable sounding words. These words sound believable to everybody that isn’t a pseudoscientist as a result of hearing the familiar “-tron”, thus assuming that it is a widely used word. As a result of the general public being brainwashed for many years via advertisement, they turn off their common sense and pretend to be well versed in the language of the, oh-so-complex, pseudoscience. Hence, the advertisers for the miracle product, “MagnaSoles”, have successfully proven that jargon saves lives and adds credibility to any statement.
Healing has been around a long time. You may think that medicine has changed a lot over the years, and it has for the better. But that does not mean that some of the practices have stayed around. prayer, accupuncture, diet, etc. have all stayed around, but have changed slightly.
The purpose of this essay is to describe and explain the uses of hypnotherapy in the treatment of a medical condition. For this essay I have chosen to look at a chronic life limiting illness called Motor Neurone Disease. This is a disease that can affect many different aspects of a person’s life and is very aggressive in its symptoms. I have met quite a few people with this condition whilst working in the Neurophysiology department at the QMC, where all the nerve and muscles studies and EMG’s are performed. It not only changes the person’s life but also the lives of the people around them. I found this research both upsetting and informative.
The rest cure is a medical treatment based sole on rest with little to no medication. Silas Weir Mitchel, American neurologist during the 1800’s and inventor of the rest cure, used it to treat diseases such as hysteria and neurasthenia. (Brought to Life Science Museum, “Rest Cure”). The rest cure lasted around eight weeks. In this eight weeks patients would undergo long periods of rest, sometimes doctors would take them from their home and place them into a new environment, they would also put them on a nutritious diet and give them electrotherapy to maintain muscle mass. “Mitchell believed the point of the rest cure was physical and moral. It boosted the patient’s weight and increased blood supply. It also removed the patient from a potentially toxic social atmosphere at home. However, the implicit point was the neurologist breaking his (almost always female) patient’s will. Some outspoken and
These studies found that these alternative methods did help to improve strength and function of these patients, but none of the studies had significant data to definitively prove this. While the data from these studies are not significant, it does not mean that they are entirely unimportant. Most of the researchers from these studies sent out follow up questionnaires about the enjoyment of the rehabilitation styles. All of the studies that did these questionnaires found that the participants had much greater levels of enjoyment and motivation while completing their from of rehab. This shows that while these alternative methods of hemiplegia rehabilitation might not be entirely effective on their own, they can serve a purpose when combined with traditional physical therapy methods. Physical therapist can utilize video games like the Wii or virtual reality software for patients that do not respond to or do not have proper motivation for traditional rehabilitation methods. This can help the physical therapist tremendously so they will have a tool at their disposal to help increase the motivation of the harder to work with patients. While the studies were performed well, they did have a number of limitations that hindered the research. Many of the studies, all besides one, had less than 50 participants, which leaves very little room for participant or conductor error. These small sample sizes also allow for outliers to throw off the data tremendously, as compared to if the study had a larger sample size. Another limitation that most of these studies had was that there were often a greater number of males to females. While this may not seem detrimental to these studies, it does provide doubt about the accuracy because of the differences between males and females, which may have skewed the data in a
Magnetism occurs when a magnetic field forms. There are two sides of a magnetic field; south pole and north pole. If the two poles are opposite, they will attract and vise versa. A magnet can magnetize an iron object. Electromagnetic waves work
The human body is mostly made up of molecules of water (H20) .The body is made up of 60% hydrogen atoms. The nuclei of hydrogen atoms are composed of one proton (a subatomic particle containing a positive charge). These protons are very sensitive to magnetic fields, and when they begin to spin they produce their own magnetic field. This means that the nucleus of a hydrogen atom acts like a little magnet. When the human body is exposed to a large magnetic field, these protons line up. A similar phenomenon occurs when compass needles line up when surrounded by a magnetic field. However a proton goes through a
With increasing application of electrical systems in households, throughout time off and at work places, the setting of humans has modified basically. thanks to the widespread use of domestic microwave devices like ovens, cellular phones the portion of the population exposed to high frequency magnetic force fields, like radiofrequencies (RF) and microwaves, has augmented apace. The potential effects of high frequency magnetic force fields on the human organism[32]. outpouring from a worn or broken seal round the oven’s door will permit radiation outpouring which may produce Associate in Nursing unsafe condition[3]. Heating of solely water in an exceedingly clean cup victimisation microwaves could lead to superheated water, i.e. water reached
The origin of acupuncture is uncertain. Some believe that it had brought wellness to people as early as 1600 BC, during the Shang Dynasty (Academy of Classical Oriental Sciences). The story is told, a soldier in China had complained of severe pain in
An electricity and magnetism phenomenon apparently unrelated to power are electrical magnetic fields. We are familiar with these forces through the interaction of compasses with the earth's magnetic field, or through fridge magnets or magnets on children's toys. Magnetic forces are explained in terms very similar to those used for electric forces:
