Maintaining The Voting Age

Some individuals might think that young teens are easily swayed by what they hear and see as well as lacking the maturity needed to cast a meaningful vote. But in fact, incorporating this law of being under the age of 18, and having young teens vote will increase the chances of innovation in our society, it could lead elections in the direction of being more successful, and more voices of the society would be heard and recognized. We are moving forward in society and the first step to positive change would be lowering the voting age.

In my position I agree to lower the age of voting to 16-17 years old because it can raise up the percentage of voting. We should be focusing more on voter participation rather than the percentage of population registered to vote. There are many factors that would increase voter turnout in America, but lowering the voting age is not one of them. In 2012 the U.S. Census Bureau reported that only 38% of voters age 18-24 actually voted.

There have been many advantages and disadvantages to the change in the age requirement to vote. Currently the biggest disadvantage has been the voter participation percentage, followed by the demographic of the voters. With the age requirement being lowered to 16 the negatives may out weigh the postive.

The younger generation are infamously known for having a low voter turnout for each election. Young adults have a loud voice when it comes to supporting their political stance but the majority of them don't vote so their efforts go to waste. We can see the statistics of voting habits from various age groups where the middle and old aged are exercising their civic duties far more than those who have just recieved this responsiblity. We do need to balance out the young and the old voters, but decreasing the minumum required age will not solve anything as 18 year olds hardly ever vote as is. We should not change the minimum voting age from 18 as it won't increase the demand for citizens to vote, instead we should focus on incentives to make it so people will want participate in the voting process.

Voting is what allows our governement to make the best decisions for our country. However some people believe that we should allow younger voters (16 years of age) to vote for our country. I would have to disagree with such beliefs for three reasons: the voting rate of young voters is already low as it is, it would decrease the currently low voting rates, and the lack of participation questions the young voters civic responsibility.

“Voting is such a poll that could be an ideal way to stimulate real debate about young people's engagement in politics.” (Fact). This quote allows young voters to see how effective voting is for EVERYONE! Why is the voting age 18? “In 1971 the 26th amendment to the U.S Constitution lowered the voting age from 21 to 18.” How come we can’t make a difference and reduce the voting age? In the constitution, it is stated that everyone is treated equally regardless of race, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, and etc. As citizens we have the right to vote, however we are denied this right just because of our age? The voting age should be lowered to 16 because the youth along with politics will be benefited greatly, they are willing and responsible

I think that lowering the age to vote would have a bigger turnout then keeping it at 18. The only thing to disprove this argument is, ( younger voters show a lack of civic responsibility). Athough 16 is a young age to vote , it does not mean they dont have a clear openion on how they want to live. If you think about it, two years later their an adult and now living their life with a presadent that they had no say over.

In the United States the voting age currently is 18 years old and now there are those that wish to lower the age to 16. If the goal is to increase the percentage of the pouplation voting there are better ways of doing so rather than lowering the voting age two years. Doing so would only be waste of time, energy, and resources.

The controversy over lowering the voting age is a difficult one. While lowering the voting age will increase the number of voters, it is not guaranteed to increase the percentage of participation. We must also consider the fact that younger voters tend not to vote. Another concern is the involvement of young adults ages 16-18 in politics. It is not common that these teens follow politics and think about who would be a good leader for their country. Lowering the voting age most likely will not help to improve voter turnout or participation or turnout. We need to work toward increasing the participation of the existing voters.

In the article “ Why We Should Lower the Voting Age to 16,” Laurence Steinberg asserts that teenagers deserve “ more than just a voice to make a change” but a right to vote (Steinberg). He elaborates on how teenagers are qualified to vote because their minds are fully developed enough to make good choices. Steinberg believes that teenagers have the responsibility to vote because currently the teens right now are having a “ thoughtful, eloquent protest.”

In the United States, voting is one of the few ways citizens can make a stand for their opinions and attempt real change. With the overwhelming importance of voting, it is very crucial that there is a large voter turnout. A huge way to increase the number of participating voters, would be to lower the age of voting from 18, to 16.

If the government allowed sixteen-year-olds to vote, they would build in them the habit of going out in elections at a young age. Eventually, that will result in increasing the overall voter turnout as the population ages. Middle adolescents would go out and practise their right out of habit. Consequently, the country will be more democratic. Moreover, politicians will care more about middle adolescents knowing that their voices count. Therefore, better services and advanced programs as well as critical wise decisions will take place creating a better environment for them. Overall, getting sixteen-year-olds into the habit of voting will definitely turn the table.

The current voting age of 18 should not be lower to 16 because youngers have other interest rather than politics, it decrease the percentage of voting participation, and leads to a bad influence from adults in youngers' decisions.Thereby, there would be a negative impact in the elections.
