The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls is about a family of six, traveling the United States and escaping their past mistakes and their fathers’ crimes. They are very poor and only live according to how their father thinks they should, no matter how wild or dangerous it is. None of the children question it for many years, and it gets the family into a lot of trouble throughout the book. The main characters are Jean Walls, Rex Walls, and Rose Mary Walls. Jean Walls is the narrator of the story. There are multiple settings in this book, but a few notable ones are Welch, West Virginia, Phoenix, Arizona, and New York City. Some common themes throughout the book are coming of age, and perseverance. This book is successful because it shows trhe adventurous, unpredictable, and entertaining life of the Walls family.
Jeans Walls, Rex Walls, and Rose Mary Walls are the most significant characters in the book. Jean Walls is the second oldest child of the family. She is very clever, independent, and curious about the world. At a very young age, she learns how to survive, basically, on her own. Jean helps provide for her family when her mother is unable to, and her father is drunk. When she was younger, she had faith that her father would be able to sober up, unlike her siblings. But, as she grew older, she began to lose hope. She realized that she needed to escape her living situation in Welch. Jean dreamt of New York City, and moving in with her older sister, Lori.
