1. What major government HIT initiatives have been taken by the government in the last twenty years? Include relevant key terms in your post. For example, RECS is a key term. RECS are regional extension centers that offer training and support for primary care providers in the process of transitioning to EHRs.
• It is interesting that technology has evolved vastly particularly in the healthcare industry some important examples are the Electronic Health Record EHR, Personal Health Records PHRs, Electronic Prescribing E-prescribing. HIT is important to healthcare as it is used as storage and also to share among healthcare workers such as from a primary care physician to that of a specialist in the treatment of a patient.
Electronic Health Record
In addition to requiring much more significant use of health information technology, such as electronic medical records (EMR), HITECH encompasses provisions that reinforce the civil and criminal execution of
Advancements in technology have made it possible for people to access medical information, communicate with their doctor, manage and track diseases, seek help, and maintain anonymity. Technology has facilitated the tracking of medical information, for example, Kaiser Permanente uses a computerized system to store and track patient information. Any doctor in a
The use of the electronic medical record and patient portals are just a few ways that technology has been applied in health care and with more technological advances we are creating many ways to access health care that were not possible before. One technological advancement that
The article, “2016 Report to Congress on HIT Progress,” explains how electronic health record became a highly used resource in the past six years. Most healthcare organizations have decisively moved from the paper based industry to an electronic records system. As the 2016 Report to Congress on HIT Progress shows, at this time, a huge amount of electronic health data exists across the United States, which was not available many years ago. This is a great opportunity for future generations to advance the practitioners’ awareness of decision making towards treatment and quality of care. The electronic health record is now necessary and very convenient for doctors to use towards review patient’s medical history.
The healthcare industry is in the midst of a major change from paper based medical record keeping to electronic medical record keeping. As part of the American Recovery and Investment Act of 2009, the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act was passed (Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, 2014). HITECH is the U.S. Government’s first major contribution to the change from paper to electronic health information technology by setting meaningful use incentive program for Medicare and Medicaid providers that met certain requirements. Healthcare professionals that meet the meaningful use criteria will be awarded financially, and those that don’t meet the 2015 guideline will be penalized. We live in an electronic world of instant access to information and by adopting health information technology we give providers better and easier access to more information which in turn allows them to make a more informed diagnosis and treatment plan for the patient. The electronic health record (EHR) is part of the new information technology. According to the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (2014.), EHR’s provide many benefits such as improvement in the quality of patient care; improvement in the coordination of patient care; more accurate diagnosis and better outcomes; a higher level of patient participation in their own care; and cost savings for the practice
The health IT system is essential to transform the delivery of health care. Innovation within the IT system includes efficient data use through warehouses as they expand health information, which allows for big improvements in the technological use. These improvements would ensure that data user safety will allow the smooth exchange of information transfer electronically between different health care providers. In this case, most hospital employees and health care organizations understand how the health information technology (IT) is important for the HCO’s functions. The passing of “the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) legislation in 2009, with its specific attention to advancing EHRs, federal dollars are dedicated to expanding EHR use in physician offices and more” (Abdelhak pg. 180). This shows that a federal government has an ability to change in the healthcare industry, so the government should incorporate science and technology development. The private sector and government funding resources will also have a significant impact to play a great role in the exploration of new software operations in terms of advancing the technological environment. Advancing this area of the organization encourages health Information
For over 10 years, all areas of industry have been investing in informational technology (IT). IT offers faster and more proficient care especially for the healthcare industry. Health information technology (HIT) is making significant changes in how care is being delivered and addressed for patients and healthcare workers. HIT includes electronic health records (EHR), personal health records (PHI), electronic prescribing and more. The potential list is endless. HIT provides for more accurate and efficient documentation, prescriptions, and education. The Obama administration came up with an answer to help in HIT by instituting the meaningful use. This paper will discuss the overview of meaningful use, its’ core criteria, and recommendations for additional criteria.
One of example of HIT is telemedicine, it can improve patients’ engagement and self-management by setting up automated alerts, reminders, and video-conferences. Instead of passive poor-managed episodes care, which often leads to severe complications, higher mortality, and higher healthcare cost; telemedicine allows the healthcare team to easily access, evaluate and manage the therapeutic regimen remotely, which improves the care quality and reduce health inequity as well as costs. In addition, nurses can also use EHRs, telemedicine and other HIT technologies to integrate and coordinate patient centered care, especially when patients need multidisciplinary care, make transitions between care settings and long-term management of chronic conditions (Heitkemper, Mamykina, Travers, & Smaldone, A., 2017).
In 2009, even though electronic health records (EHRs) were available, many hospitals were still using paper charting. EHR technology is expensive and, consequently, was being deterred. Therefore, HITECH was enacted.
The driving for of HIT is the HiTech Act which will result in EHRs use instead of paper medical records to maintain patients’ health information. The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act, a component of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, represents the Nation’s first substantial commitment of Federal resources to support the widespread adoption of EHRs. With more complete patient information, providers improve their
The ARRA includes the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act, which pursues to improve American Healthcare and patient care through an extraordinary investment in Healthcare IT (HIT). The requirements of the HITECH Act are precisely designed to work jointly to provide the necessary assistance and technical operation to providers, enable grammatical relation and organization within and among states, establish connectivity in case of emergencies, and see to it the workforce is properly trained and equipped to be meaningful users of certified Electronic Health Records (EHRs). These computer software products are designed collaboratively to intensify the footing for every American to profit from an electronic health record (EHR) as part of a modernized, interrelated, and vastly improved grouping of care delivery.
Legislation such as the Health Information Technology for Economics and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act promoted meaningful use of electronic health records (EHR) to provide better patient outcomes (CDC, n.d.). Meaningful use is regulated by CMS and National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) and is based on five goals including: improving quality, safety, efficiency and reducing health disparities, engage patients and families in their health, improve care coordination, improve population and public health,
Health information technique is biggest term in today’s era, technology used for various administrative, operations management, and direct clinical functions in health care organization. An electronic health record (EHR) is define by the Health Information Management System Society (HIMSS) as a longitudinal electronic record of patient health information generated by one or more encounter in any health care setting including patient demographics, progress
Electronic health records (EHRs): Medical records are now kept in an electronic versus a paper chart. All health information regarding past and current medical history, treatment plans, and medications are kept in the EHR. The system also allows sharing of medical information from provider to provider as needed. Many HER systems have a feature to allow patients to log into a patient portal to review lab results, diagnostic tests, plans of care, and email access to the provider
Health information management involves the practice of maintaining and taking care of health records in hospitals, health insurance companies and other health institutions, by the use of electronic means (McWay 176). Storage of medical information is carried out by health information management and HIT professionals using information systems that suit the needs of these institutions. This paper answers four major questions concerning health information systems.
