In the song Space Oddity by David Bowie, major Tom was sent up to outer space, with technical difficulties unsolved, he gives up and wanders off into space. Although major Tom is a character with such a daring and risk-taking attitude, he is revealed to be un-knowledgeable with machines and technology. Major Tom couldn't figure something out with the spaceship’s dead circuits so he resigned and answered to ground control ”Here am I sitting in my tin can far above the Moon Planet Earth is blue and there's nothing I can do”(line ). By giving up so quickly and not being able to fix the spaceship’s problem, the singer shows that major tom and ground control relied on technology to make the trip to outer space a complete success, but were outsmarted
