Gordon Cooper, or better known as “Gordo,” was the pilot for NASA’s Faith 7. While he was orbiting Mercury, his whole ship short-circuited, which meant there was no electricity powering the control systems. He had to manually re-enter Earth’s atmosphere. That required a lot of math, skill, and courage. Gordo managed to land safely, and the whole way through he was perfectly chill. Even though I would be panicking if I was in a spaceship in the middle of nowhere, I would enjoy that kind of scenario. You have to really think under pressure because it is life or death. I like to look out for opportunities that strike out of the normal daily routine. This makes life exciting. It’s like playing the card game BS. You could win the game by not lying

The first song that I listened to was Breakthrough by Tia Fuller. In the video, it includes a group of young, talented players including Miki Hayama on the piano, Miriam Sullivan on the bass, Kim Thompson on the drums, and Khalil Kwame Bell on the percussion. The melody was really catchy and you can hear that the alto saxophone is the main instrument. When Tia Fuller played the alto saxophone, she barely rests. The song is a fast tempo song.

Josh Ritter’s “Another New World” is a somber and haunting song, released in 2010 and under the genres of Alternative and Indie. Its purpose is to describe and entertain, much like a story. The audience stems from this purpose, and includes those who enjoy storytelling, or the alternative type of music. The interpretation of this song is influenced by the subject and voice, and the effect of this piece relies heavily on the use of sibilance and personification.

Musician, song-writer, and social activist, Pete Seeger wrote the hit “Turn! Turn! Turn!,” which was popularly covered by the American rock band, The Byrds. Seeger adapted the lyrics from Ecclesiastes chapter 3. Before delving deeper into the meaning of Ecclesiastes 3 in class, I would have seen little to no difference between the meaning of the Bible and the meaning of the Seeger song. For me initially, both the song and chapter expressed the notion of life’s beautiful and dark times: the time for joyously dancing about the room or the time for feeling frozen with grief. But, when reading and discussing Ecclesiastes in class, I finally read the verses in a larger context. Imagine that you went to a trip. When you come back, you can’t wait to share your interesting experience with your friends and give them all those souvenirs you just bought. While your friends don’t show any interests at all. What happen you wonder? Are they no longer my friends? Later you find out that someone spread some unreal dirty secrets of yours. I believe this because I know that each artist creates this work of art which takes a great deal of time and effort.
