I have selected the plot with the thought of talking about pollution affecting water quality, with a sub plot of deforestation. Making water a “spirit” gives it a human form and characteristic so audience can all relate and understand it better. The main character is drawn in the form of a young girl no older than 12, so little kids feel more related to it. Also since her hair is made out of water, it perfectly described the water quality at the time without actually mentioning it. Also young audience will find it more interesting and more “water” like. The setting is in the forest because that's where nature is stereotypically presented in, and it’s also effective in showing the damage humans have done to it. The message of reducing water …show more content…
I drew her earlier this year and partly this is what inspired me to do as the plot of my story. When I was drawing her hair I was thinking, what if the water is not clear but polluted water like a lot of the waters now. How would she be feeling? Would she be sad? Will she be able to do anything about it? and the list goes on.
I felt like the questions really struck me and got me thinking, the idea was too deep in my head.
Until I was trying to think of a plot for sustainability that I realised she’d be the perfect character for my book, and it will talk about water pollutions like how I questioned it. Because I already gave it heaps of thoughts beforehand it didn’t take me long to figure out my actual theme or plot, and the draft picture book was fun and easy to do.
Also another book/movie that have influenced me is the “Lorex”. It talked about deforestation and in the end how the animals all had to leave in the same way my story did. The message in that story somewhat involves money and greed, where my story doesn’t. My story focus more on the environmental effect of humans being greedy and ignorant but in my story it is not mentioned, but more of a hidden
The book”Winter Chance Walking in Wolf Tracks” by Ron Gamer is a great book on how it ties to the environment. This boy 14 years old goes out on a ice fishing and camping trip overnight and gets lost he forgot to pack his food so he has none. His friend Seth works hard to try and find him. In this book and in real life it is very important to preserve the land around you and to protect our animal species and not be a poacher..
Throughout many novels authors use physical features or objects as a tool to help explain a deeper meaning of the story. Tim O'brien has also used this technique, by using water to help explain the meaning of many of his stories. O’briens stories about Vietnam and the different aspects surrounding the war, the settings based around water become more than just a physical construct.
Oceans are essential for our environment since they produce more than half of the oxygen in the atmosphere covering about seventy percent of the Earth. Without our vast oceans, humankind would be unable to survive. In Annie John, by Jamaica Kincaid, utilizes water as a motif to show the growth and develop of Annie, a young girl in the Caribbean. Learning how to properly balance the values of the colonial world and the native Caribbean culture, Obeah, Annie grows up through her mother’s parenting. Kincaid uses water as a tool of empowerment to Annie’s growth by curing, nurturing, and transforming her.
In The Jungle, by Upton Sinclair, and The Grapes of Wrath, by John Steinbeck, the characters are forced with economic, social, and political problems that they must cope with throughout the story. Both books are similar in that they emphasize that in this country, one simply cannot win unless they play by nature’s rules.
The non-fiction book that I decided to read was, “The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History” by Elizabeth Kolbert. What led me to picking this book was that it seemed the most interesting out of all of the non-fiction book selections. Since I already knew most of the reasons why animals went extinct, this book didn’t have an impact me. But when I previously learned about animals extinction, I was impacted because it let me know what happened to dead species species. Examples of this could include learning about the dinosaurs when I was younger or learning about climate change and hunting when I was in middle school.
The Jungle, written by Upton Sinclair was a very touching and motivating story. Sinclair aimed for our hearts, but instead, he hit our stomachs. The Jungle is a story of hardships and trouble, some successes and many failures as a family tries to achieve the "American Dream." In this book, "The Jurgis Ruckus' myth of failure is the other side of the Horatio Alger's myth of success." (xxvi)
The Lorax by Dr. Seuss depicts a world ravaged by deforestation and suffering from other environmental crises. In the town of Thneedville, an aspiring capitalist begins to sell his new product and as a result of booming business, the cornerstone of his business pays the price. The trees, the only natural resource used in production, are harvested to the point of extinction. The lack of trees leads to soil erosion, air pollution, and species extinction. While this is a children’s tale and Dr. Seuss’s illustration may be quite extreme, it is a reality for future generations of our planet. Human involvement in ecosystems by clearing land for urban development, logging, and agriculture have all exacerbated the rate of decline in the region’s natural systems. The deforestation of rainforests for the cultivation of palm oil is causing the possible extinction of orangutans and exacerbating air quality issues in Indonesia.
“How can you buy or sell the sky-the warmth of the land? The idea is strange to us. Yet we do not own the freshness of air or the sparkle of the water. How can you buy them from us? We will decide in our time” (Chief Seattle: 1855). In the Documentary “Flow – for the love of water” it visualizes the global crisis we face on Mother’s Earth as it pertains to the diminishing of fresh water. The Documentary portrays along with the help of experts that this global crises is affecting each and every one of us in today’s society including animals. The film shows us that water is constantly being wasted, polluted, and privatized by big co operations. Prime examples of these greedy companies were mentioned in the film such as Nestle, Thames, Suez,
The jungle by Upton Sinclair has made me realize how history shaped what america is today. It was in this book that raised the spotlight on many topics including: meat handling, minimum wage, workers compensation, sexual harassment, child labor and most importantly the right to express one's thoughts. Now we live in a country that not only honors our freedom but respects and looks over our health. The jungle takes place in the 1900s when over 9 million immigrants were flocking to America searching for what was known as the American dream. So was this particular lutheran family that came to America for just that. Not knowing that in the end they would be contributors of the awareness and importance of checking meat handlers.
It influenced me to go after my dream and to realize the person I want to be when I grow up. It had me thinking that just one novel can put a big change in your life and to follow my own dreams and nothing is
Throughout my years at West I have seen many changes in how I interpret texts and interact with others. The kite runner affected me greatly because I never thought about myself in terms of being proud of my family, before reading it. It made me reexamine my thought process and now when I read other texts, I find myself focusing on family. I think this change happened because i Didn't know what i had until i read the kite runner. This was important to my growth as an individual because when i grow up i'll have a family of my own, and will raise them though my new eyes. In addition, looking at economy through the hunger games, shaped how I view our economy . I think this affected me because in the hunger games the rich had a better chance at
The book I chose to do a report over is called Under the Sea-Wind by Rachel Carson. Rachel Carson is an environmental writer who has written multiple books over issues happen in the natural world around us. In Under the Sea-Wind tells the story of animal behavior through descriptive and poet writing. The novel is split up into three separate stories. Book 1 is called EDGE OF SEA, book 2 is called THE GULL’S WAY, and the last book, or book 3, is called RIVER AND SEA. Each book focuses in on a specific animal and how it travels during its life cycle. Each book tackles a separate problem that is troubling the life form of that location. Carson uses fiction style writing influences to express the real problems faced by organisms on the shore, in the open sea, and moving water that humans otherwise would not have known. Carson covers migration and seasonal change, the difficulty for fish (or other animals) to grow up in the ocean, and the lesser known lives of ocean animals in the deep abyss.
Water is a critical source that is utilized by most living things on Earth to support it ways of live. The usage of water ranges from basic household needs to agricultural purposes. Water is one of the resources on the Earth that is becoming more and more scarce and the water available for usage is being further contaminated by pollution causing sickness and death.(World Health Organization).Countries are experiencing droughts affecting the water supply needed to maintain irrigation, thermoelectric power, and public supply. The definition of water pollution is the result of when too many toxic materials are present, in which negatively impact the water to be unsafe for its intended purpose, which may be drinking to industrial processes
