Malayala Manorama is a daily newspaper in Malayalam language which is published in the state of Kerala, India. According to World Association of Newspapers, it holds a position as top 26th most circulating newspaper in the world (third largest circulating newspapers in India behind The Times of India and Dainik Jagran and most widely read daily and number one in Kerala. It was first published as a weekly on 14 March 1890, and currently has a readership of over 20 million (with a circulation base of over 1.9 million copies). The Malayalam word "manorama" roughly translates to "entertainer". The Week (India), an Indian weekly, is also brought out by the Manorama Group. Once, the challenge K. C. Mammen Mappillai built into Manorama the kind of grit and determination Indian journalism had only seen rarely. He maintained the secular and literary tradition set by his uncle. And he infused it with a new vigour, setting a lively style, starting columns for women and children, and initiating debates on politics and industry. Opening windows to the world outside, he made Manorama a powerful catalyst of social change. He straddled diverse fields. He was a teacher, writer, legislator, social reformer, banker, farmer, planter, industrialist, insurance baron... He lived a full life many times over in 80 years.
The National & Quiton Bank under his chairmanship was one of the largest banks in India in the 1930’s. To break him, the Diwan [prime minister] of Travancore Sir C.P. Ramaswami Aiyar broke his bank by engineering a run on it in 1938. Malayala Manorama was sealed on September 1938, after it reported how the police assaulted and shot people agitating for civil rights. Later, K.C. Mammen Mappillai was jailed, and all his property confiscated. He walked out of jail two years later. His brother K.C. Eapen, who was jailed with him, was carried home dead.

The First Security Bank (FSB) of Malta, Montana fall victim to a crime of credit card fraud, money laundering, and embezzlement. The crime stared a small city in Montano with a couple thousand, who was startled from the crime. The vice president of operation of the bank was a pillar of the community and the suspect of the bank’s crime. The scheme was committed over a long period of time. This crime weakens the foundation of the bank and possible may run it out of business. The committee was in a frenzy with the bank and the suspect about spending the community’s money. The shareholders gave the president “30 days to clean up the bank or pawn the bank off to another financial institution.” (Volz p.1) However, the bank pulls through the crisis and gains more customer as the business begins the recover period.
When I grow up, I want to be a black gum tree. Black gum trees are known for their internal strength. Instead of dwelling on outward beauty, they spend more time focusing on their inner growth and developing their core. Only after they have achieved this goal can they produce beautiful fruits that draw animals near to them. When first coming to this country as a Hispanic American you may face a lot of difficulties and find more problems than the average white American. Hispanic people go through different adversities and have trouble overcoming them. In The House on Mango Street the main character Esperanza is the one that narrates the story, she explains what it is like to live on Mango Street. She shows the readers that living on Mango Street is perceived as a terrible area, if one were looking from the outside in. But those that live there feel that they live in fair living conditions. The fact is most of the people who live on Mango Street don 't know what it 's like to live outside of mango street. In the story, they show a lifestyle that most Hispanic people deal with especially the ones that come to America and have to figure out how to make ends meet. In The House on Mango Street, the novel has many themes and problems, such as gender inequality, stereotypes, and language barriers. With short stories like "Aria" and "the myth of Latin Woman," a solution is always found. Sometimes there is a simple solution and other times, it is not so easy to find, or there 's just no solution to solving the characters problems and they are still trying to look for results.
To be a slave to others ideologies, is to give up your own sense of freedom and lie to your own self. When our own self interest is put behind others, it makes us feel lost and uncertain in our own life. We are not sure what to do with our lives. In life we are faced with many hard circumstances that are not easy to overcome, but if we can reach back to our old roots we can free ourselves from our patternistic lifestyles and pursue what we want to do. In the short story “Behind the Headlines” by Vidyut Aklujkar, we see life through the main character Lakshmi’s eyes. Her life has been taken over by her husband’s life and she is trapped living the same way for 12 years. Lakshmi’s life can be a parallel to a news story itself. When we first hear about breaking news, we don’t know much about the story since new information is coming out- In this short story, when we first start reading we aren’t given too much information. As the news keeps covering the story, we are given more background on the event and all the circumstances that led up to the event, and as the news reporters get to the end of the story, we are finally given a conclusion that either makes us happy or sad. In this short story case, you are left feeling happy that Lakshmi found her way out. When we are stuck in a rut and not able to take control of our own life, we become lost. In addition, disappointment is another reason Jayanti choses to let assimilation take over her self-identity. When she finally realizes that America is not as glamorous as she imagined, read about or saw in pictures, she feels disheartened. When she arrives, she looks forward in seeing, “neat red brick house with matching flowery drapes, the huge, perfectly mowed lawn green like it had been painted, the shiny concrete driveway on which sat two shiny motorcars”(73). However, she is greeted by a, “crowded [apartment] with faded, over stuffed sofas and rickety end tables that look like they’ve come from a larger place...the tiny room I am to occupy - it is the same size as my bathroom at home” (73,74).
This quote is an example of how in Indian society, even a distant relative can exert life-changing influence on a person. On the contrary, in the Patton’s family life there seems to be no influence coming from extended family members. The limited time frame in which Arun lives with the Pattons does not provide extensive insight of the family’s life. Because of this particular way that Desai chose to write about the Pattons, the reader is led to believe that affiliations with extended family are inexistent in the American family’s household.

However, Gandhi’s popularity was destined to be short lived as many parts of the country soon burst into protest over increasing prices and inflation coupled with frustration over inefficient bureaucracy and red tapeism. These protests were most animated in states such as Gujarat and Bihar, where students marched on the streets and united around political activist, Jayaprakash Narayan. When in 1975, a judge in the Allahabad high court ruled that Gandhi’s 1972 electoral victory was void due to governmental interference in campaigning, the opposition demanded Gandhi’s resignation. The ensuing strikes across the country including those of public services such as railways coupled with the opposition’s relentless demands of resignation led Gandhi to declare a state of emergency in 1975 due to a state of internal threat. This decision effectively censored the free press and jailed opposition leaders, marking the start of a dark period in Indian History. These were the culminating political and social conditions in which Sholay was released in 1975.
