Malcolm Muggeridge wrote a biography about Mother Teresa called Something Beautiful For God, which has received criticized for not being impartial. The question is “is it more important to be impartial or inspiring?”. Although the biography should be inspiring, the inspiration should come from the person’s story. Unfortunately, Muggeridge did not tell Mother Teresa’s story, at least, it was not his sole focus. Instead, he focused on himself in an attempt to show how inspiring Mother Teresa really was. Towards the beginning of the book, Muggeridge told the story of how his driver ran into a guy on the street, put the injured man into the car and drove him to the hospital. The sight of so many injured people made the author of the biography
Dorothy Day has been given many titles and received much praise for her achievements in life. Her most well-known achievement is that of founding the Catholic Worker Movement, a modern-day community focused on serving the working poor. Day lived a life in service to others, and this service contributed to her profound legacy that exists today. Documenting this service and how Day came to be a servant in the Catholic Church is her autobiography, The Long Loneliness. In the Postscript of this autobiography, Day details a summary of what her central ideas in life were and how she lived these out. One can see throughout The Long Loneliness how it is that Day came to these ideas and the ways in which she grew. Through this essay I will display the different places in which the ideas shown in the Postscript are found earlier in Day’s autobiography.
Mother tended to blame others for Mugg’s awful actions. In paragraph three, the narrator says that Muggs had bitten a Congressman who his father called to see on business. The narrator's mother never liked the Congressman, she said that “Muggs could read him like a book;” also mother said that the congressman's horoscope sign could not be trusted. In paragraph four, the author explains that Muggs was irascible in the mornings. Then goes on to tell a story of when Muggs chewed up the morning paper just has his brother Roy was coming down stairs. Homever the narrator told the end of the sorry saying “Muggs bit Roy viciously in the leg.” In paragraph seven, the narrators says that the police were called because of Muggs biting Mrs. Rufus Sturtevant.
This made constructing an overall argument slightly difficult; however after further developing it, I was finally able to make one that communicated my goal with this project. The most difficult part of this report was that since Nellie Bly is not a very well known writer, most of the sources about Bly’s life and career reiterated the information which I had already acquired. To overcome this, I turned to new sources such as newspaper articles, book sources, and databases. One thing that I would have done differently, if I had more time, was read all of the articles and books that Bly had wrote, not only for the project, but also because they are incredibly
Women have been heroic and courageous throughout history, though not all of these heroic (or courageous) adventures have been shown in any way. Some of women’s heroic and courageous adventures are portrayed through short stories, books, and movies. Eudora Welty’s short story “A Worn Path,” Barbara Kingsolver’s book The Bean Trees, Louisa May Alcott’s book Little Women, Zora Neale Hurston’s story “How It Feels To Be Colored Me,” and the movie “The Piano” all show women going through their own amazing and heroic adventures. In these stories, the authors and director share with the reader (and watcher) the
The story starts as giving some much needed historical context, explains his connection and motivation behind the book. He says, “six boys called to me from half a century ago…” and later explains “One of those flag raisers was my father”. That motivation for writing this book is seen throughout as you can tell he has a passion for it, he's not just a writer writing for a publisher. He's an American writing about his father's story of when he was called on to protect his country. He introduces characters in more detail in chapter four where the real story begins.
The Eleanor Roosevelt Papers Project is an online collective of Eleanor Roosevelt's columns, articles, books, letters, and transcripts for her speeches, radio and television appearances, creating a concise and informational recollection of her life’s work. The creators of the collection cite the lack of teachings of her activism for human rights and prolific journalism. It is clear from reading the explanation for the collective’s reason for

Through their speeches, both Susan B. Anthony and Elie Wiesel encourage equality in their nations. Anthony accomplishes this by encouraging the audience that the right for women to vote will support the achievement of equality, while Wiesel does this by asking people to pay attention to the politics and the social revolutions of the era, noting that these events have the potential to impact each. Overall, these two individuals show us that it is important for us to learn lessons from the past so that we may act upon these mistakes and prevent them from occurring in the
Angelou’s encounter with her brother speaks volumes to the character he has. Not only did his words encourage, but his actions did as well. Her brother’s calming demeanor helped unite his family in such an important and crucial time in Angelou’s life. Angelou’s mother then helped her by comforting her physically and emotionally. Angelou explains her mother’s compassion, “…if Momma hadn’t reached for my hand I would have drifted back to Bailey and Uncle Willie, and possibly beyond. She made a few slow jokes about my feet getting cold, and tugged me along to the now-strange building” (Angelou, 2014, p. 184). Angelou’s mother assures her that she can do this and encourages her to keep going. These moments with her family positively changed her. Although the actions did encourage Angelou, the words made a larger impact. The demeanor and eloquence in which Angelou’s mother and brother spoke kept her calm and united her with the rest of her family. This validates that words from family members have an enormous effect on people.
The first reason a biography should be inspiring is that people like to read books that inspire them. When one reads a biography they want to be inspired and want there to be a purpose to them reading it. They want to get to know the main character as the writer has gotten to know them. In a part of Something Beautiful for God, Mother Teresa says, "It was all a gift. I wanted to serve the poor purely for the love of God. I wanted to give the poor what the rich get with money." Its hard not to get inspired when you read Something Beautiful for God. To be able to get to understand and get to see what Mother Teresa and her ministry was about.
