In our vine, we wanted to show Malvolio's love for Olivia and himself. Even though he is very arrogant, we see that he truly cares about Olivia in the way that he is willing to act practically insane to try to win her affection so we show all the things he did in our vine. We also show a picture of a man looking at a woman above him because not only is he below her in class but she is also a beautiful woman and is out of his league. And our last picture which we show for a while is a man being lifted into the sky by a balloon because Malvolio's dream was that greatness would be “thrust upon” him and he would rise above his current level to the place where he deserves to be.
Although Malvolio loves the idea of being count and in a position where he can properly boss everyone around, he also truly loves Olivia and wants to marry her. When we see him walking in the garden before finding the letter he is fantasizing about having, “been three months married to her”(41). He loves and would do anything for Olivia for example biking after Cesario to deliver the ring and although it is his duty he also does it to please her and win her affection. After reading the letter written by Maria he states, “in this she manifests herself to my love”(47). He admits his love to

Malvolio frowns upon Sir Toby for mingling with Maria who is a servant below his class but when the same opportunity is presented to him he is fine with someone of the higher class marrying him. He dreams of telling Sir Toby to, “Amend his drunkenness”(43) or that he would kick him out of the house even though Toby is a higher class than him and he should officially be taking Toby's orders. Malvolio kisses Olivia's hand repeatedly while wearing the yellow stockings and defies her order to go to bed ignoring his protocol and defying the natural order even
So many things have changed since the 1500s when the play was made. She's the Man is a modern twist made in 2006 concerning only the key points of the play. The whole trickery portion that goes on between Malvolio and Maria is just another aspect of the play that is not necessary to the plot of the movie. Most other facets of the play were modified to entertain a more modern audience. For instance, Olivia was mourning her father and brother’s deaths which would not have suited the theme of the film. It was modified to say that Olivia just went through a hard breakup. It has the same effect of melancholy, but presented in a different
(Shakespeare 2.3.105-2.3.106) This humiliation from Sir Toby was only a mere beginning of more to come. Maria then convened a congress with Sir Toby and Feste and came up with an innovative scheme. Malvolio picked up a love letter from “Olivia”, but it was actually forged by Maria and he embarrassed
Next up is the power that Malvolio was given by Olivia. After Malvolio attempted to break up Sir Toby, Sir Andrew, and Maria’s fun, they began to plot against him. Malvolio however, was simply trying to keep order in Olivia’s house. Olivia has given Malvolio a position of some power in her house. Judging from different parts of the story and by Olivia’s position as a countess it is safe to assume that being in charge of the affairs of Olivia’s household was no small task. She was obviously wealthy and had a large house with many servants and for Olivia to try and manage all of those things on her own would be a very difficult task, but also a task that she couldn’t trust to just anyone. She obviously trusted Malvolio with running the affairs of her house. Sean Benson touches on this point and argues that, “As Olivia’s steward, Malvolio is in control of the domestic affairs of her household; if he were as inept as […] others have thought, how has he risen to this important managerial
Malvolio?s conceitedness was broken and then he sees that he did not truly love Olivia, but was only flattered that he had been loved by someone so beautiful and young.
In Twelfth Night, by William Shakespeare, there are many characters that are greatly disliked by others, many would say Malvolio is the most disliked due to his profound attributes. Malvolio is Lady Olivia’s steward and his ego, gullibility and egotism cause him to be mistreated and greatly disliked. Malvolio’s egotism is portrayed throughout the play because it is a trait that affects him constantly. His gullibility is mostly seen during the major prank that is played on him. Malvolio’s sternness is demonstrated throughout the whole entire play as well, but it especially seen while Sir Toby and Sir Andrew are having their usual drunken nights and Malvolio will not put up with it. Malvolio’s egotistical, gullible and stern personality cause him to be justly abused and easily disliked by others.

Malvolio is considered the antagonist of the play and he experiences vain love. Malvolio is the head servant for Olivia and is also the messenger for her. He enjoys interrupting and criticizing others for their behavior or actions. His careless and rude demeanor led to being despised by the other characters such as Maria. Maria schemes a brilliant plan to bamboozle Malvolio. She forges a note impostering Olivia and leaves it for Malvolio to discover. The note intrigues him and makes him want to impress Olivia.
thomas more was philosopher, journalist, and lawyer. During Thomas more’s life he had occupation like the one listed there, he was also a father of four children and one step daughter. His whole life consisted as being king henry VIII key counselor. He would then go back to his family. Thomas more was also a lawyer because of his father and while studying that he became close friends with Erasmus. He then became a philosopher and journalist when he was studying in
In twelfth night, Malvolio’s self-love is that of a reckless and unsettling kind. With a name that translates to “ill will” in Italian, it appears the audience are not supposed to warm to this unrelenting and strict Puritan. Whilst the idea of a steward whom thinks himself to be better than his other staff members does provide comic relief to the audience, it also hints at some of the motivation behind his advances towards Olivia. His ambitions of becoming “Count Malvolio!”(2.5.1063), and adorning a “branched velvet gown” (2.5.1075) certainly speak of someone who wishes to up their societal value. Malvolio appears blinded by his own ambitions for his future, with his supposed love interest Olivia even claiming that he is “sick of self-love” (1.5.380) it is no surprise that the forged letter only adds to this dangerous self-infatuation. Whereas Orsino’s self-love was counteracted by Viola’s true love for him, Malvolio’s persistent smugness and lack of empathy makes him the least redeemable character. Malvolio is the “enemy of the pleasures of indulging in one’s appetite” Atkin (2008: 81). This infatuation goes so far as to him believing Olivia appreciated his embarrassing tirades of wearing cross-gartered yellow stockings.
Other characters in the play strongly dislike Malvolio. When Olivia isn’t around he thinks and acts like he’s the king and that Olivia is his lady. Malvolio had stated, “ My lady bade me tell you, that… she’s nothing allied to your disorder” about Sir Toby (W.S 23). Even when he comes into the scene with other characters, he decides to say, “Besides, she uses me with a more exalted respect than any one else that follows her”(W.S 30).With that he’s saying that Olivia treats him like a king and puts him over top of everyone. The only reason why Olivia had to deal with him is because he is her steward. A reason why I think she only puts up with Malvolio is that he will do anything the she commands. For when Cesario was outside she had said to Malvolio “ Go you, Malvolio: if it be a suit from the count, iam sick, or not at home; what you
Malvolio looks to marry the Countess for similar reasons as Aguecheek; thus, making flattering Olivia an unlikely concept. Additionally, the Steward
Another example is the way in which Olivia adopts the pretence of mourning and the puritanical Malvolio is tricked into the role of Olivia's suitor and becomes a smiling courtier.
Maria and the conspirators decide to mislead Malvolio into thinking that Olivia is in love with him. Maria decides to lead him on by writing a letter, but means to be from Olivia. This love letter is meant to instruct Malvolio to do actions that Olivia despises. Maria is able to mislead Malvolio because she has the same print and seal as Olivia. Shakespeare is able to trick the characters and create many portrayals of them.
Malvolio is a social climber, he feels that if Olivia would love him his status would be higher. But because of
The noblewoman rashly hands Malvolio to his wrongdoers when she hears “Madam, the young gentleman of the Count Orsino’s returned-” and responding immediately, “I’ll come to him,” (Twelfth Night 3.4 63-65). Olivia does this without hesitance, even with the matter of her servant’s questionable sanity. But the most concluding evidence is when she takes Sebastian’s side, thinking him to be Cesario, over her uncle Toby and even curses at him: “ungracious wrench, / Fit for the mountains and the barbarous caves, where manners pe’er were preached! Out of my sight-” (Twelfth Night 4.1 46-51) and then immediately diverting her attention back at Sebastian, “Be not offended, dear Cesario-” (Twelfth Night 4.1 52) as if he’s more important than her kin.
