Mama's Character In Everyday Use By Alice Walker

In the short story “Everyday Use” By Alice Walker, Mama’s personality is very critical of herself and her daughters. She often feels insecure about herself and unappreciated from Dee who she send away to Augusta for school. Mama is strong, loving and sincere and wants nothing but the best for Maggie and Dee. Mama comes from a poor family and worked hard for her children. She knows where she come from and is proud but at the same time wants better for the life of her children. Mama doesn’t understand the general view of the world, but feels that Dee rejects her family origin. I think mama wants Dee to be proud of where she’s from and value her heritage. Mama wants to be recognized for all she’s done and anticipates that they are respective of her.

I can kill and clean a hog as mercilessly as a man. (Walker 1587.) Oppose to how Dee would like her to be “I am the way my daughter wants me to be: a hundred pounds lighter, my skin like an uncooked barley pancake. My hair glistens in the hot bright lights.” (Walker 1587.) I think she feels her daughter doesn’t approve of her appearance. Mama is proud of her hard work to provide for her and Maggie and hope Dee sees that. Mama and Maggie are in the yard waiting for Dee’s arrival. While waiting for Dee, Mama is thinking about their reconciliation with her. She pictures herself on a television show starring people who made it out their impoverished communities. “Sometimes I dream a dream in which Dee and I are suddenly brought together on a TV Program of this sort. There I meet a smiling Gray, Sporty man like Johnny Carson
