I now see that as a critical failure that could have afforded me the information to adjust in the situation and potentially modify my approach. Lastly, in a situation with a Board of Trustees, it is very naive to think you can carry change efforts while key management positions are absent. While it was a key component to change the organizational structure, this process needed to come before cultural changes. I have the desire to affect positive change with my Board role for Roscoe Village in the same way as my college role, but I need to be cognizant of my limitations to do that at least in the same manner. First, I would most likely not entertain such a cultural change before a Director was hired. This is a very difficult choice because the hiring of a Director is the biggest decision made in an organization and to forego that opportunity is unfortunate. Conversely, if I were to include the managers, I believe I could have done several things to assist the effort. I would have utilized a two-way communication method that would assure that I did a better job employing Grice’s communication maxims (Thompson 59). While this would have been difficult from a time perspective, it was very necessary to properly set up the new process for success. I also would have considered having myself or someone else from the Board sit in the interview to shepherd the process. That could have afforded the benefits of the interaction but guarded against negative or unintended outcomes. I think the role and responsibility of a board member complicates this to an even greater degree as you must reconsider your communication and conduct yourself in the language of the entity you are overseeing. Boards of Trustees have different roles and in some situations a board member could be asked to bring their expertise to the entity they are serving. I was asked to be a part of the Roscoe Village Foundation Board of Trustees for my financial and administrative background. The incident that I have studied provided me with a great learning opportunity that displays the mismatch between the culture of the organization that I work for every day versus the culture of the Roscoe Village
