One way the author reflects the hopes, fears and expectations of the culture in the book was through Antonio’s dreams. Antonio’s dream reflected several of his most difficult cultural challenges including his parents conflicting aspirations and the towns conflicting religious beliefs.
There are many layers of themes that are subtlety imbedded into the film. The political theme of the film is a truly intriguing portrayal of life in Spain during this tense time. The underlying message of the film is one of defending the freedom of expression. It explores the importance of gaining knowledge through one’s own personal experiences. Culture is used as a pathway to achieve personal freedom. In addition, the film attempts to break some of the taboos surrounding an adequate education, focusing instead on this education through experience. Observation is used as a way to awaken the senses. Another theme that was imbedded in the film was childhood with the inclusion of a vast number of topics. The film not only contains scenes that deal with war but it includes scenes that include family, love, and
When writing about the theme, the writer should keep in mind that he/she will write an analysis of a theme that appears in either a text or movie that argues a specific point. The writer's aim in this type of essay is to pick a theme from a text or movie and write about what that theme does for the story or what that theme makes the reader realize about that story and/or life itself. The best way to come up with such an
She uses the literary element, theme, to describe this. The theme of the story is the feeling of disaffection. Also, the story discusses how Cleofilas’ husband Juan abuses her and it first she thinks nothing of it, because she feels that “to suffer for love is good”. But the more she thinks about it she gets to a point where she gets fed up with it and plans a way to leave her husband and go back to Mexico with her father. Cleofilas talks Juan into taking her to her doctor appointment. When in the doctors’ office, her doctor knows exactly what happened and helps her escape. She takes a bus back to Mexico to her
The author creates themes of commonality that are relatable to many in this story story. There is a crucial moment in rebellious child’s lives that pushes them to act out. For Lola this happens to be her mother and her battle with breast cancer, “with her cancer there wasn’t much she could do anymore” (Diaz 5). Lola,
The moon that represents the Luna family, and sea which connects to the Marez, are forces which push Antonio to make his final decision about family. In the beginning, Antonio tries his hardest to please both of his parents by combining their dissimilar ideas about his future. Although Antonio begins his life thinking he is a mixture of both parents’ heritage, the juxtaposition of the symbols in the book changes his mind on that, “It is the blood of the Lunas to be quiet... They are quiet like the moon – And it is the blood of the Márez to be wild, like the ocean from which they take their name” (Anaya 41). Aside from the obvious fact that the Spanish word for moon is, in fact, Luna, that family represents the moon. The calmness of said moon contrasts with the wild men of the sea. Maria is controlling of her family, similar to how the moon controls the sea. Each contrasting idea propels Antonio in separate directions- either towards the Luna priests or the Marez vaqueros. Despite the fact that his mother wants to make a priest out of Antonio, the other side of his family thinks in their own unique way, “He is a Marez… His forefathers were conquistadors, men as restless as the seas they sailed” (Anaya 6). Once again, the contrary sides of Antonio’s family pull him to the sea instead of the moon. The true struggle Antonio goes through is choosing his own destiny, even with the strong influences of both the moon and sea. Suddenly he has a moment of realization and tells his uncle, “‘I am Marez,’… ‘That is right, you are a Marez first, then Luna” (Anaya 250). Even though he may think he is Marez first, he still lives with Luna blood coursing through his veins. After all, he skipped a grade, which makes him a boy of learning. Then again, his adoration of nature proves
I can only imagine what immigrating to america is like for these families, everyday children my age and younger are risking their lives to come to America and It really makes me appreciate how much I have. For Lourdes, Enrique, and Maria Isabel in Enrique’s Journey they must make the hard decision of leaving everything they grew up with in Honduras to come to america for a better life. She will go to the United States, and make money and send it home.” (p.20) Lourdes decides to make the trip because it
La Loca’s existence is crucial for two major reasons. First, her resurrection in the first chapter declares the nature of the story and hints of its magical narrative. Castillo wastes no time to inform her readers that So Far From God is a work of magical realism. Second, La Loca exists to encourage Sofi to rebel against the religious institution and the political establishment. As the narrator reports, “Loca had never left home and her mother was the sole person whom she ever let get near her” (221). This is a hint that La Loca’s relationship with Sofi goes beyond a mother-daughter relationship. It is a cause-and-effect relationship, since Sofi’s rebellion is staged on three different phases—each phase begins with La Loca (the cause) and ends with Sofi (the effect).
In the end, the face of the real enemy is revealed. It's one of his own. Savagely killed by his own country-men. Showing no mercy to a man who only wants what's better for the whole country. I love the exposure shown to what the message was. It had many symbolisms and morals one might enjoy learning. John Arcilla really turns into the character he's portraying, he even looks like him.The movie Heneral Luna is just an ordinary movie for me before because I know it’s all about Philippine history. At first, when I saw the trailer of that movie was did not caught my attention and attraction. Honestly, I’m not very interested to watch that movie before because I know it’s boring but when my friend asked me to go with her in a movie to watch Heneral Luna and she will owe me a free ticket so that’s the time I agree. The reason why my friend got an interest to watch that movie, it was because their professor in Philippine history was asking

All the stories in the book had a specific theme that somehow identifies the Latino culture. The most known theme is “mi casa es su casa”. This saying is important in the Latino culture because it shows our friendliness and our caring for one another. Mi casa su casa means that we give a shelter to our families or friends who are in need. Especially, to our family members who are traveling from different states or countries. We provide them with shelter while they look for a job a job and are able to get a home of their own. Another reason for that is
The main themes that surrounds the movie are racism, desire and determination, and individualism. Throughout the film, racism is an underlying problem that continually occurs. The students in Mr. Escalante's class are often discriminated by their racial identity. This causes many students to feel down about themselves and even result to assuming they are not “smart enough” for the math class. The second theme is desire or determination. During his teaching, Mr. Escalante references “ganas”, which translates to desire. He insures his students that if they want to pass the class, they must have desire and determination. Therefore, determination is a giant part of success and without it, we would not go anywhere in making efforts to improve ourselves. The final theme is individualism. The students in the math class doubt their self worths and believe they aren’t intelligent enough to pass the class. They lack self importance and do not release that they are capable of succeeding. Although, the movie shows that slowly, but surely, the students gain more and more self confidence as Escalante teaches them.
