Before deciding where I wanted to do my service learning, I knew I wanted to do something that had some relevance to my degree that I will be receiving in healthcare management. I was eager to gain more experience and become more knowledgeable of how an organization operates as it relates to healthcare management. I was able to secure an opportunity to volunteer at the Dallas Veterans Affairs (VA) Hospital. After completing the required VA forms, I got partnered with Mr. Alonzo Price Jr. who is a Management Analyst in Ambulatory Care, which is the department that oversees the Primary Care Providers.

There are a variety of reasons that I am highly interested in becoming a community assistant for Barrett, The Honors College. Serving the Barrett community and its residents is something that I would thoroughly enjoy and excel at. I embarked on a new journey where I had the privilege to be elected and work at the MSU Denver student government assembly where I absorbed a great deal of knowledge and gained huge insight into running an office of 16 and the many administrative tasks required to do so. My time at the MSU Denver student government allowed me to develop skills in event management, meeting management, employee and meeting scheduling, office purchasing, managing email and media communications, working in compliance with FERPA, managing a budget of over $200k using Microsoft Excel, allocating a student fee fund of over $2 million, and preparing reports for the Provost, President and the Board of Trustees of the university. I am currently working at the student government as well as at the Mental Health Center of Denver as a medical scribe through Scribe America. In a short period of time, I acquired a good understanding of HIPAA, Avatar, received consumer experience facilitator training, fraud/waste/abuse compliance training, and client/patient rights training. Within 4 months with Scribe America I was promoted to become the Spanish-language floor trainer. My ability to converse efficiently, as well as my writing and analytical skills were all greatly enhanced (wpm increased to 85) in this position. I believe my background and skills closely match your job requirements and I am confident I can make a positive contribution to your organization in a different position.
