In recent years, combining Western medicine with alternative or complementary treatment has become very popular. Complementary and Alternative Medicine, CAM, are composed of herbal medicine, acupuncture, yoga, and manual therapy just to name a few. This paper will focus on Manual Therapy. What is Manual Therapy? Examples of Manual Therapy techniques and what they are used to treat. Who can practice Manual Therapy and what kind of education is needed Also a case study where Manual Therapy has been used with success will be reviewed.
What is Manual Therapy?
Manual Therapy is a form of CAM used in the United States. In order to treat musculoskeletal pain and disabilities, many times a physical treatment called Manual Therapy is used (Wikipedia, 2016). This treatment includes kneading and manipulation of muscle, joint mobilizations and joint manipulation (Wikipedia, 2016). Manipulation is further divided into three categories: mechanical, neurological and physiological (Manual Therapy, n.d.). This kind of CAM it is practiced by massage therapist, occupational therapist, chiropractors, osteopaths and osteopathic physicians.
Techniques
Many techniques are used in Manual Therapy. Acupressure, cranio-sacral therapy, joint manipulation and mobilization just to name a few. Among them the most popular ones are chiropractic and osteopathic manipulation and massage therapy (U. S. Department of Health & Human Services, 2016)
