Many of the characters in The First Stone have impactful second chances that they may not fully appreciate at first. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, it takes place in Salem, Massachusetts during colonial America. Throughout the story a group of girls makes accusations a mass of people of practicing witchcraft, one of the worst crimes to commit during that period, and people are being sentenced to hang for denying witchery. In the Crucible there are many lessons that Arthur Miller wants to teach you. To me a lot of the lessons that were taught in this story are important but I feel like one of them is the most important. Arthur Miller demonstrates that one of the lessons implied in the story is people’s character and how it affects those people and others. Examples of character are Giles Corey, John Proctor, Abigail Williams.

I was really excited when people told me there was romance, action, and adventure because they’re my favorite genres. But, I was disappointed when I read the first page. It’s 3rd person limited. I thought it would be a little harder to connect with the characters. However, as I kept rereading some lines and questioning the characters, it became easier for me to understand them. For example, Katsa, the main character of Graceling, written by Kristin Cashmore, musters up her courage to defy Randa because she could no longer tolerate him even though she was afraid to imagine what would happen next. Randa wanted others to fear him and to do that, he had Katsa torture people who didn’t listen to his orders. According to Susan Fisk, “empathy for another’s happiness and suffering depends fundamentally on recognizing that the other has a mind-that is, the same capacities for thought, emotion, desire, intention, and self-awareness as ourselves. I empathize with Bitterblue as she is strong facing hardships throughout the book.

In Miller’s portrayal of the ghastly, sickening inquiry of witchcraft many people in the 1690’s were people of the township were maintaining guard for their beliefs; while others of the community of Salem were cowards who took the easy out of the accusations they were on trial. The play takes place during the era of the Salem Witch Trials in 1692. In his composition, he includes the story of Mr. and Mrs. Proctor, a married couple living outside of Salem in the time period of the trials. From Lyman’s point of view, you see the two go on adventures together until Henry gets drafted into the army. While Henry is away, descriptions are vague and the only thing the reader learns is Lyman spent his time fixing up their red convertible. When Henry returns, the story picks up as Lyman observes how the war has changed his brother. In an attempt to get Henry’s original self back, he smashes the car.
