The Maria/Zerkow subplot is a parallel to the main plot of Trina and McTeague whereby the relationship is marked by violence and marked with greed. Maria cleans rooms while Zerkow is a junk dealer who is attracted to Maria from her stories of trunks which have golden plates and bowls which previously belonged to her parents and ancestors. The recurrence of the Maria and Zerkow to the main story is a subplot which is parallel to the main plot both directly and inversely. Maria and Zerkow, like Trina and McTeague develop a conflict over money and wealth with Zerkow murdering her just like Trina was murdered shortly after.
