The philosopher who I have chosen to talk about in this essay is Maria Montessori. I have chosen Maria Montessori because I am attracted to her theory that I believe in. Maria Montessori’s method and theory have quite inspired me, partly because any child would enjoy coming to a school where it is a place for him or her to work in their own environment. One of the distinctive characteristics of Montessori schools is the way they provide a carefully prepared environment. The schools also provide opportunities for children to grow intellectually and emotionally. Maria Montessori cared a lot about children and children’s education. Montessori began her work with children at the University Psychiatric Clinic in Rome in 1898. She discovered that the children’s problems were often emotional rather than medical and she worked long hours to establish this idea. Maria wanted to meet the needs of the children so she designed “Special learning materials”. She trained the teachers as well, so they could also meet the children’s needs. “Learning is not something which the teacher does, but that it is a natural process which develops spontaneously in the human being” said Dr Maria Montessori. It is not acquired by listening to the words, but of experience in which the child acts on his environment. She believed that the child can learn from and construct experience in the world. Learning she said was not something that needed to be forced instead learning is something that humans do naturally. The early years especially are for mental growth. Throughout the early years of life the child absorbs impressions from the world around him. A unification of physical and mental energy comes about when a child becomes absorbed in work. Montessori called this “Normalizations” and “Concentration” she said was the key. As she observed children, Montessori said that they can take in information from their environments without any effort.
