Education for early childhood has changed drastically over the last past couple of centuries. With new laws and new programs, education for younger kids was changing for the best. Though change didn’t happen on its own it took some great people to stand up and take a stand in what they believe in. Once one person stood up, others followed over the course of time. One of the many activists for the rights of children is Marian Wright Edelman.
Marian Wright Edelman was born June 6, 1939 in Bennettsville, SC. She was one of five children. At the age of fourteen, her father Arthur Wright died, with his last words being to her, “Don’t let anything get in the way of your education.” When Marian finished school, she studied at Spelman College on a Merrill Scholarship. After she returned from traveling to the Soviet Union with a Lisle fellowship, she involved herself in the civil rights movement. Her partaking in the civil rights movement inspired her to study law. Marian studied law at Yale Law School. In 1963, Marian Wright worked for the NAACP in New York and the NAACP in Mississippi after graduating from Law School. The CDF was established to be a voice for poor, minority and handicapped children. The agency is a non- profit organization that does research on problems and possible solutions to children in need. Hilary Clinton got involvement in this program when President Bill Clinton was in office. Today CDF has been up and running now for more than 40 years and now is a national wide organization. The agency works with children at a federal, state and community level, serving over 125,000 kids so far. Mrs. Edelman has also published books about her ideas. However more she is a advocated pregnancy prevention, health care funding prenatal care, child care funding and so much more different program that is well known in the world
