Introduction Marijuana is the dried leaf of the Cannabis Sativa or hemp plant. The hemp plant’s dried leaves are greenish gray in color and when smoked or ingested, marijuana has psychoactive effects in humans. These psychoactive effects include: relaxation, heightened senses, laughter, altered perception of time, and increased appetite ("What Are Marijuana Effects?"). The main chemical in Marijuana that causes these effects is delta 9 tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, but there are about one hundred other chemicals in the hemp plant that are related to THC called cannabinoids. The United States Drug Enforcement Agency or DEA has defined marijuana as a schedule 1 illegal substance. The DEA defines a schedule 1 illegal substance as “...drugs with no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse.” (“DEA / Drug Scheduling.”) According to the DEA, schedule 1 drugs are the most dangerous to human health. Other schedule 1 drugs include: heroin, LSD, and ecstasy; surprisingly these drugs are listed as more dangerous than drugs such as methamphetamine or cocaine. Because the United States government has put marijuana on the top of it’s list of the most dangerous drugs, the consequences of marijuana use and distribution can be momentous. In states that heavily enforce marijuana laws such as Louisiana, one can find himself facing serious jail time for possessing or selling marijuana.
