Marijuana use is a socially learned behavior from peer groups, much like all behaviors. The proper technique is taught, the pleasurable effects defined, and re-definition occurs when bad side effects happen. To be classified as a user of marijuana, one must first lean the proper technique. Novices do not start out knowing how to achieve a high, rather they learn by mimicking experienced users in a social setting. Many do not want to admit their inexperience, while others seek confirmation from their peers. The proper technique must be utilized in order to achieve the high that is sought. Secondly, the novice must learn to define their experiences as pleasurable. Novices, ignorant to what they are experiencing, incorrectly define their experience
